Heavy Rock with AV Nailbomb
« on: January 24, 2012, 10:05:36 PM »
Here's a quick rock song I put together a few days ago. Can't get the bass to be quite as clear and punchy as I'd like, but overall I think it turned out ok. Excuse the lack of title.

Nailbomb bridge > Tanglewood LP copy > MXR Wylde OD > Engl Screamer combo > AKG D770

I found mine to sound clearer (without loosing the punch and "in your face" character) when set not too close to the strings (and a bit slanted to keep the highs thick enough).

Still a good example of the ABomb's low mid roar,  thick but not fatty and really abrasive.

I really love this pickup, much more versatile than you would expect - I suspect the ones labelling it as "90s metal one trick pony" never tried it set low, volume pot rolled off a bit (50s wiring and PIO cap) and plugged into a rather vintagey (I mean: "not modern hi gain") amp. It cleans up beautifully to a sparkling about to breakup tone without getting thin or dull and still cuts thru the mix.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Thanks for the tips, but it was more the bass guitar I was meaning

But I agree, the Nailbomb is great. Not sure if it's the pickups or guitars, but the Nailbomb/Cold Sweat combo sounds much better than my EMGs and Miracle Men (although, that might be the really thick strings and cheap pots being the problem there).

How would you say the Nailbomb compares to the Miracle Man & EMGs for metal?

Untill I sort some wiring out, I'll not mention the Miracle Man yet: doesn't seem fair.

The Nailbomb isn't as high output as the EMG 85, but has a much clearer, less fizzy sound to it. Better note definition and doesn't distort as much (so has a much "cleaner" clean sound to it for the same gain settings). The 85 is bassier too I find, which is why I moved it from the neck to the bridge. Might just be my imagination, but the Nailbomb doesn't seem to get as ice-picky when the treble/presence is cracked a bit.

The EMGs are in a basswood Cort X-11. I tried the 81 in the bridge too, but it seemed a bit thin and harsh sounding, so it's in the neck now where it handles the lows better than the 85 did. I had noth BKP sets in there at one time too, but the actually weren't as good in this guitar, which is why I'm suspisious of the pots in my Epihpone - they came from the Cort when I swapped the EMGs over.

Also, thanks Mr Air. Much appreciated! :)
