NAD
« on: January 25, 2012, 03:38:59 PM »
Got this today, had a play and its very good indeed even using the recording compensated outs into my PC.  Will be running it into the effects return of one of my HTH amps, could work out cool.

Lovely piece of kit. Sound clips required though, at your earliest convenience.

Been reading up on this preamp and apparently they're essentially a Mark IIC+, must say that it did do a great Metallica tone with the EQ scooped even with my Tele.

Did a quick recording test direct to ProTools this afternoon and it was tasty, very impressive.

And some gut shots...  one of the filter caps has seen better days like, cap job imminent.  Was a bit disappointed to see Sovtek 12AX7WBs all throughout, would have hoped for something nicer, oh well.  Some NOS glass will have this sounding even sweeter.

This is what happens when a cap rated at 65°C sits between two tubes. That's like putting a Fray Bentos pie in the oven with the lid closed.

Looks like the snap-on connector has given some issues and someone has cut the wire and soldered it directly the the diode - I'll be putting it right at some point.

Will also be putting higher-temp spec caps in there too when I take out the 30uF smoothing caps, some 105°C ones would be nice to bulletproof it, but the F&T 85°C ones will be fine if not.  I like those silver Rifa caps, they're rated at 105°C, but their availability seems patchy these days.

Sounded like a good amp.  I wouldn't mind getting a hold of the Mesa MV
