New Amp Day
« on: January 27, 2012, 05:11:01 PM »
I'm looking to buy a new Valve amp for around £500-£700 to nail a tone for Instrumental melodic Hard Rock, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions? I'm going after that Neil Zaza/Andy Timmons vibe. More or less an amp that can really scream tone when need be, but clean up for them Andy Timmons Neck Pickup tones. I'd like it to really let my style shine through, as to the sheer brutality of a 6505. Something Expressively Organic.

Any Ideas? I'd like to keep the cost as low as possible mind as I have a cab to get as well.

Cheers,

Definitely a used Laney VH100R. It's what Andy Timmons used before he moved to Mesa. They're very very good amps and very very versatile.

If the VH100R doesn't tickle your fancy try the Marshall JVM.

Just checking out the Laney right now. I was also looking at the JVM, but I've never been a fan of marshall so I wouldn;t know what to expect from this one.

What particular Marshall don't you like?

If you don't like Marshall all together than I'd suggest the Laney. Or you could maybe look into a Mesa, something like a F50 combo

gh would work if you don't need a separate clean channel

I'd prefer 2 Channels tbh.

And with Marshall, any I've owned or played requires some serious Crankage to get them to Distort/Overdrive. With Peavey's, Mesas, Bugeras, etc. They get good tones at lower volumes, and phenomenal tones at cranked volumes. I think its the american style distortion I like rather than British Overdrive.

I seriously considering the Laney VH100 though :)

I've got one of these that I've done the depth mod too - makes it fatter and chunkier.  Got it as a spare/backup amp for gigging, but I'm happy to let it go to fund some other purchases.  If anyone is interested, PM me.

haven't tried it, but it's cheaper than the gh yet has a ton more features. that sets off my warning bells that it's probably/possibly not as good (or at least, not as well made). I've heard some rumours/claims that it's made in china (or pretty much made in china but then assembled in the UK).

Not trying to put you off, or anything, just it's worth keeping these things in mind.

I'l have to find a dealer to compare. If you've heard of Jack Thammarat, he uses the Ironheart now. What you think? Link below

yeah i've seen a couple of his youtube vids recently (including that one)

he seems to be a pretty good player

it's very hard to tell from a youtube vid, basically. I wouldn't want to judge it based on that. EDIT: just realised that sounds like i think it sounds like cr@p in that vid. i don't- if anything that sounds pretty good (and a bit smoother than teh GH, plus you actually have cleans  ). But just you don't know what all other kit he has linked up to it to make it sound like that, how it's been recorded, etc. etc. etc. Plus it doesn't tell you what teh reliability is like.
