NGD - Yep, another PRS...
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:30:33 AM »
Not that I get on well with Mark at Guitars4You at all, but he opened up the shop especially for me to grab this at 8:30pm last night

He's had it a little while and dropped the price a couple of weeks ago, and I was tempted.  On Thursday he dropped it another £200 and 20 mins later he had a phone call   8)

It's a Chris Henderson signature singlecut in glorious McCarty Burst with a (and my first, would you believe) 10-top.  I love the look of the guitar, and it's around the ideal 8lbs in weight.  I've been unhappy with my Drop D live sound for a while (using my Esquire, it's just not thick enough) so a 25" scale singlecut with an adjustable bridge should be perfect.

I also thought the hot pickups would be spot on too, but....

The original owner dicked about with the wiring and installed Classic '57s in the neck and bridge

So, BKPs it is.  I just need to decide which ones now though.  Any suggestions?  I'm after classic-style tones from the neck and middle but something a bit hotter for the bridge to cope with gainy down tunings (Drop D and Open G).

Whatever I go for, it'll be Zebras in the neck/middle and a Reverse Zebra in the bridge at Mrs Twinfan's request:

Another one and a single cut, so it has no chance in the stable of Dave. :)
In the transient time it is with you and presuming you don't want ceramics, i'd give the emeralds a blast.
Have you had them before though? I can't quite remember.

Yeah, I had Emeralds in a McCarty Korina and liked them.  Cold Sweats are appealing a bit too for a more modern sound.

You can tell I'm a Thin Lizzy fan can't you  ;)

Another one and a single cut, so it has no chance in the stable of Dave. :)

Bought for a specific job though this one Matt, and with a longer scale - there must be an SC out there I can love!

Nice guitar Dave.  I looked at one in New York last month, as they seem to have reduced the prices on them here, but I'm leaning towards a Santana or Hollowbody at the moment.  With the original pickups there were some great tones to be had from it.  I'd be tempted to put a pair of VHII's and an Emerald in it, given what you were saying you wanted, but I think the PRS pickups have a lower output middle that's wired out of phase (it gives the guitar an almost single coil sound when you bring it in).  If that is the case then perhaps a set of PG Blues and an Emerald might work to restore the original sound.

I was very tempted to buy that guitar at the price, glad it went to someone I know!

Agreed with the alternating black/cream colour scheme, that's exactly what I'd do on a three pickup guitar!

I'd be thinking Emeralds or Abraxas, but Phil's suggestion of a lower output middle pickup is interesting - I'd been wondering if that would be the way to go in this kind of setup.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

So was I  :D

Still got the Cold Sweats I removed from my PRS Standard before I traded it in - would have loved to have tried them in that guitar.

Never fret (excuse pun) Philly you might get a second chance at it in a few days/weeks

That's a stunning beauty. Did you consider Rebel Yells? Or a RY for the bridge, Mule-middle and Emerald-neck.

Nice one Dave! Another one that might make the journey down south one day?

I've now reached a point where I'm more surprised when you DON'T buy another guitar!
I think I hate being indecisive.

I've just removed the middle pickup cover (it was only loosely soldered on) so I think I may well keep the original PRS #7 there.  It's a 7.4k Alnico neck pickup, so classic low PAF style I guess.

So do you reckon:

Emerald bridge
PRS #7 middle
VHII neck

Blimey, what the hell would that sound like????

That looks like one very nice guitar. I love the colour, but I always find that three humbuckers look a bit odd. Pickups-wise what about a set of Abraxas and a MQ for the middle? I think that could be a sweet combination.

The single cut fixed bridge are one of my fave PRS, although I think 2 pickups would be enough for me lol. It's on my to play list if I ever shop for a Gibson Les Paul.
