Emerald v Riff Raffs in Les Paul?
« on: February 11, 2012, 07:32:12 AM »
I've concluded that I probably have a Les Paul at the darker end of the tonal spectrum. I've tried various pickups (unpotted Mule, Crawler, Nailbomb, plus some other makes) and always find that I'd like the tone slightly brighter. The Mules are possibly closest to what I'm after, and they sound excellent in another guitar now, and the Les Paul seems to be the common factor so maybe I need a brighter pickup to compensate?

Looking at the website and reading the forum, Riff Raffs or Emeralds appear the most obvious choices so I was wondering if anyone had been able to compare in a LP and give me an idea as to how they might differ? Alternatively, should I be considering anything else (RY? VH2? etc.)?

Thanks, in advance, for any help.

I should also add that the pots on my LP are 500k.

Tim recommends that you use the CTS BKP 550k pots.

I installed 4 of them in my Les Paul.

Thanks for the helpful replies so far! It did seem that the Riff Raff should be the obvious choice but I rather liked the clips of the Emerald on the website too, more so than the clips of the Riff Raff probably. However, I am not sure whether they are in the same guitar, etc., in those clips hence was interested in opinions and experiences on how the two might compare in a LP specifically.
