Last night I went to see......
« on: March 07, 2012, 08:30:16 PM »
....Walter Trout at The Brook in Southampton.

Fantastic. Much better than I thought it would be and he is a really funny guy and great showman too. It als helps that he is really rather good at playing guitar. Nice little surprise organised by my Dad.

The support act (Mitch Laddie) was also pretty darn good.

Any Trout fans on here? I might have to get some of his stuff.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I have a lot of his stuff.  He was great when he played with John Mayall too.
So many pickups, so little time

He's one of those people I've read about more than heard.

I think I'd like his music though - am I right in thinking he's at the more rockin' end of the blues spectrum?

Was he playing his usual hardtail Strat?

Ah, pretty much at the rockin' end of the scale although there were a few more traditional numbers.

He was playing a hard tail but sadly not his 70s one. The one he was playing looked like a reissue although the neck was getting pretty worn in, don't think it was a relic.

His approach was proper old school as well. Amp (Mesa Boogie) > lead > guitar. Varying levels of gain controlled with volume knob. Lots of swells used in a very musical way. Interestingly he played mainly on the middle pickup for most of the night.

Like Robin Trower!  :)   He mostly uses the middle for rhythm, neck for solos, only occasionally uses the bridge.

They did have a picture of Robin Trower at The Brook so I am assuming he has played there - he was playing a red strat and had a ridiculous gurn going on.

I'm ashamed to say that I don't know any of his stuff though.

Walter Trout is one of those players that I keep telling myself I should listen to more but never get around to. I am glad you had a great night. He plays around here( Sussex) on occasions -I must look out for him.

Check out Bridge of Sighs and/or Robin Trower Live! for starters.  :)

I have no recordings but I saw him once playing a smaller club. Excellent player.

Cheers Stephan

I keep meaning to Philly but other things always make my mind drift! I'm terrible for concentration.
