NOS all the way for me. It all starts with the feel and sound. Ultimately the same body shape, you can play the sh!t out of the NOS and one day it will look like a relic. The Relic probably won't ever sound as good as the NOS by the way you describe it.

From what you describe, it's the NOS that would get me as well.

Looks are important to me - I won't try a guitar if it doesn't appeal looks-wise. So I'm guessing that the NOS is almost there for you on it's appearance anyway. But if you touch a guitar that goes "PLAY ME!!!" to you, you're kind of sunk.

I tried a 60's sunburst Roadworn (less dangerous price-range, but still the same effect :lol:) because I was curious about them. I wasn't convinced about the relic thing, and in the shop it certainly had the odd minus because of it. But looks-wise it was "OK" and would improve. However, the moment I touched it I couldn't put it down, looks went out the window.

I'm not quite as strat-centric as Frank, but I'm pretty close. That Roadworn is probably my "this one stays, the rest could go if necessary...". It's not my easiest-to-play guitar, and it doesn't cut it when I'm in "I fancy humbuckers at the moment", but there's something about the way it sounds and responds - all I've got to do is brush the strings in passing and it says "pick me up and play me".

Sounds like the NOS could do that to you.

Can i point out that even thought fender use nitro lacquers for the final finish on NOS legacy custom shop guitars, the paint and basecoats are still modern poly based.. ie very hard wearing. You'll still get the checking etc but depending on how relic'd you like a guitar (i like gallagherised) it may never reach that worn thru level no matter how much you play it. course if you feel like taking a sander to it ;)

There's a maple neck version too in a slightly darker colour. And Telecasters. And strangely for Fender, HSH models. My credit card is burning a hole in my pocket. At least I think it's my credit card.

I went for the Masterbuilt Paul Waller NOS. Wasnt a hard decision 2nd time round. I've not heard much about Paul apart from he's the newest MB and talented. I'm not too bothered about it being MB or not. It just happened to be the one that i liked the sound of most.

Based on 1963 Strat. Alder body - she weights 7.26lbs. Quarter-sawn maple neck with mid-’60s oval “C” back shape. Round-lam rosewood fingerboard, 10.5inch radius and medium jumbo frets. Hand-wound pickups by Abigail Ybarra: Custom ’65s in the middle and neck, with a slightly hotter version at the bridge. comes with a pimped out cream leather case and red linning.

My fav guitar sound is the neck pickup of a 60's style strat. This was perfect and along with the playability it sold me the guitar. However, I do like a fat bridge sound. Its overwound but I will prob add a baseplate or something just to make it a bit fatter.
