Pickups for Ibanez SZ520QM
« on: March 09, 2012, 02:49:21 PM »
Hi all, I'm hoping for some help and advice!

I want to replace the stock pups on the above guitar and was wondering of any opinions or help!?

Its a set-neck, mahogany body and neck, maple top and a rosewood fboard.
I am in a post grunge/hard rock band. Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Soundgarden a hard, heavy, loud but not metal I guess.

I spoke to a super gentleman on the phone, who's name has escaped me (sorry), we discussed possible Black Dog or Rebel Yell for the bridge and maybe the same for the neck. I was thinking Rebel Yell in the bridge and Black Dog in the neck.....but I am still tempted to look at Nailbomb for the bridge.

Can anyone out there help, advise or just chuck your 2 cents in? :)
Thanks

No experience with the Black Dog but I really like my Rebel Yell set. It's in a LP Custom - mahogany body, maple top, 3 piece maple neck, ebony board. I don't think you will go wrong with the RY set.

NB and RY will do both. NB has 90's-metal flavour, I guess the RY as a tight heavy rockpiclup is spot on (had an SZ myself). I would consider a Cold Sweat for the neck.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

different flavours...
holy diver is amazing for Alice's stuff... better than the duncan JB and the motor city afwayu Jerry uses now...
I bet the rebel yell would do the facelift's brighter tones pretty well too
alnico nailbomb sound very mid 90ish, a la Helmet, Silverchair, earlier Tool, with that aggressive and harder edge and less mids
the ceramic version might get close to Godsmack's tones
black dog is the best for soundgarden, similar to the holy diver, but smoother, darker and less hot
I'd probably pick the holy diver over the others but that's a matter of taste

Thanks so much for your replies :D As you can imagine I have trawled youtube for days over this!

I am really leaning towards the Nailbomb (ceramic) for the bridge and Cold Sweat in the neck. I didn't think I wanted 'high output' pickups but as I have listened to demo's you can really hear the 'grind' in the distortion with higher output pickups.

Thanks again, I hope when the are fitted to give some feedback on what I think :)
