Pickups for ESP Eclipse II
« on: March 11, 2012, 06:50:57 PM »
Hi Everyone,

First time poster.  First time hearing about BKP was a few days ago.  I've always had seymour duncan's (JB, '59, hot/cool/vintage rails, pearly gates, alnico II pro).

I just bought another new guitar.  It's a new ESP Eclipse II in Silver Sparkle with the JB/'59 duncan combo.

I'm thinking about swapping them for a set of BKP.  I'm having a hard time decided which set I want.  At first I was thinking I would go with the Rebel Yells (chrome covers-ray guns) for sure but after googling it I've found that more people are leaning towards the holydivers vs the rebel yells... or so it seems from my search results.

I was wondering which of the two you would recommend for my guitar?  It's all mahogany with a maple top.  I play many types of music, this guitar I want to use to classic rock, rock/hard rock, and some metal such as metallica.  I'm not a huge metal fan but I do like it.  I'm into bands like lynyrd skynyrd, kiss, the darkness, guns n roses, metallica, motley crue, and some "punk rock" stuff like the goo goo dolls '93 album Superstar car wash.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!
Rebel Yells, Holydiver, Irish Tours, Emeralds, Black Dog, Mule.

The silver sparkle has an ebony fretboard, I guess. Normally the Eclipses are a big brighter and tighter on the low end than a typical Les Paul. The Rebel Yell is not what I'd pair up with my Eclipse. I'd indeed recommend you something with a more generous bottom end and warmer top end - Black Dog and Holy Diver for example; I'm sure some people will have some more advice, as they know other pickups like the Abraxas.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

I would take the Black Dogs over the Holydiver.  I've used both, the Holydiver is a bit saturated for my taste.  Although, it is a great pickup.

Depends on your amp. If you went with the Rebel Yell, should be fine.  You can try using the 500k pots instead up installing the 550k pots.  That takes the presence down a bit.  I like the Rebel Yells.  It can do all of what you mention.

If you get BKPs and make the most out of a great guitar you will not be disappointed. Since this guitar will be used more for hard rock I'd get a set of black dogs. A black dog neck and holy diver bridge would be really cool though.

Does anyone have, or have a link to a video of, a les paul style style guitar with black dog(n) x holy diver(b) ??

Someone must've tried that combo before?

You might want to consider Abraxas too. A bit hotter then the Black Dog, but also with good mids and still PAF-flavour. They will do Satriani-stuff too.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I got a LP clone with Black Dog neck and Alnico Nailbomb. I can whip up a clip of the black dog if you're interested.

Skynyrd = vintage style pickups = Mules
The Darkness, Motley Crue = Rebel Yells
Guns n Roses = something with Alnico II magnets = Stormy Mondays
Metallica = Miracle Man or Cold Sweat

So overall I would pick the Rebel Yells. The bridge pickup will be a lot brighter and clearer than the JB, though so make sure that is what you want.

Cheers Stephan

I'm going to go with the rebel yells I think. Going to place an order today. Unless anyone has any reasons why I should make another choice. I've been told by bkp that they won't be "too bright".... Anyone using these pickups in an ESP eclipse ii??

Not in an Eclipse II but in a LP Custom - mahogany body, maple top, maple neck w/ebony board, tune-o-matic plus stoptail. It's definitely not too bright.

i have a rebell yell in the bridge of my eclipse II and it sounds tight and warm.  Sounds really good.  I would like to try the nailbomb in this guitar as well but im pretty happy.  I have the vhII in the neck which im happy with two. if i had to do it again i would have just gotten the calibrated set.
