What am I missing? :)
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:16:07 PM »
Ok guys this is just for fun really - I've had quite a few BKPs over the years, and I'm after a new bridge pickup to go in a guitar I'm gonna build, but I don't know what to get. So I thought it might be interesting to get some opinions on which BKP I have missed and should really try next!

So, as far as bridge pickups go, I've had a Warpig, Nailbomb, Crawler, Aftermath, Abraxas, Black dog, VHII, Riff raff, Sinner.

My faves tend to be in the middle area of output; Black dog, Abraxas, VHII, Crawler, although I love my Aftermaths too.

My gut feeling is that the Rebel Yell is one I should really try, but is there another that any of you think would be the one I shouldn't miss??!

(btw, if it helps, the guitar will be 7-string, probably alder body, rosewood neck, fixed bridge, with single coil middle and neck pickups, and I play funk/blues/pop/rock/heavy rock thru a Diezel Herbert, but it doesn't matter too much cos it'd be good to get anything, whether it sounds similar something else I have or if its a brand new sound)
Bridge: (A)Pig, HD, Jugg, PK, (A)NB, Crawler, Aftermath, RY, Abraxas, Emerald, BD, VHII, RR, Cobra, Sinner, Trilogy, Stockholm, Supermassive.
Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.

If you really want to go different and get something you really donīt have, check the HSP90 range.
MQ set for example might be a nice flavour (got a MQ neck today, could not hear it yet though).
Should also suite your styles nicely.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

No Cold Sweats?

Not sure they'd suit your alder/rosewood guitar though.  Holydivers maybe?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

The one you're missing the least is the Holy Diver, because you have pickups close to that.

I'm a fan of the Miracle Man, in general, I think it's a great pickup.

Frankly though I think you should try the Mules, because all the good things I hear about them simply can't be completely untrue.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Mule, Emerald, Cold Sweat, Holy Diver, Miracle Man. Btw, I don't hear that much about the Emerald-bridge on the forum.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

well, if you liked the black dog, crawler and loved the aftermath, I bet you would enjoy the holy diver as well

Thanks for the input so far everyone!!

Holy diver isn't one that's ever appealed to me, though I can't really say why :? I guess I think its gonna have an 80's feel midrange push and I'm not sure I'd like that. Same goes for the Miracle Man really, although that's more because I think there's a mid scoop that I wouldn't like. And I think any sort of P90 is out because its for a 7-string guitar and Tim doesn't do 7-string P-90's.

Tim did suggest an Emerald for the last guitar I built, so maybe its time to try that, although I'm now also thinking that maybe I should try an unpotted Mule, just because of all the mojo!!lol Not sure how microphonic it would be at gig volume though?

Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.

The Miracle Man is not midscooped but reading the list of pickups you already have my first thought was Emerald.

Cheers Stephan

Nolly has an Emerald in a seven-string, don't know if you've seen this thread:

Thanks for that, Philly, it does seem that the Emerald is a hell of a versatile pickup. It's gonna be combined with a Sinner in the middle and a Trilogy suite in the neck - could be a great combo imho. And my favourites so far have been from the vintage hot range, so I guess it'd be ideal to try the only one in that range that I haven't had yet :)

(I'm still tempted by all the BKPs that I haven't had yet though lol - and I'm kind of surprised that no-one came in here shouting Paaaaaiiiinnkillleeeerrrr!!!!!lol)

well, it's a bit hotter than the crawler and also pretty fat, has the smooth and thick single note response of the black dog but with a tighter low end and the aggressive midrange of the aftermath
those are all mid heavy pickups, and the diver sits right between them tonewise
leads are fluid and rhythms are defined and thick
it's pretty much what most rock guitarists look from late 70's to nowadays distorted rock tones
not necessarily an 80's thing at all, unless you want it to
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I'd have to agree with Eric. I have a Holydiver and love it so much I may well be putting a set of them in my other guitar. When I think of BKP I often struggle to think of much that's like the Holydiver. The Black Dog, Crawler, Aftermath and Nailbomb all share SOME characteristics with the Holydiver but only the Holydiver combines the best bits of all of them. It has the thickness of the Black Dog with a crisper low end, the fatness of a Crawler with more power, the mids of an Aftermath with a more fluid tone and the versatility of a Nailbomb without the 90s Metal feel to it. What's more, a Holydiver will make an Alder guitar sound huge whereas I think an Emerald will be too bright for that wood.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

See, when you put it like that...........  :)
