Pickup? - Deathcore, Drop Ab, Mahogany, 5150
« on: March 31, 2012, 03:42:19 PM »
I need a clear, articulate pickup for a mahogany guitar played with a 5150, going for a deathcore sound.  The C-Pig clip on the BKP website sounded the best to me, but I've seen comments that it's often too dark in mahogany guitars.  I need something tight and fairly even response.  I also play a swash amp 8-string with Lundgren M8s, and where that guitar has a high-end bite and tons of character, I would rather this guitar to be a more balanced sounding rhythm guitar.  The Aftermath seems it has too much midrange growl and may be similar to the Lundgrens.  The 5150 already has overbearing kids that the Aftermath could make worse.  The Miracle Man might be the one for me, but the clips are unimpressive, although that be what to look for in a rhythm guitar.  I also haven't seen any comments on it's tightness.  I need staccato, almost djent-like response, but I use a more standard tone.  Also, I'll probably be switching to a Dual Rectifier at some point this summer.  Suggestions?

The Miracle Man is SUPER TIGHT. The ceramic warpig is tight but not as tight but is probably the most evil sounding from BKP and the CWP being too dark in mahogany guitars is probably accurate but i've never tried mine in a mahogany body, neck guitar so i don't know. If something is too dark you could always switch out for 1 meg pots. Just did that for my Alnico warpig on one of my basswood esp's and it $%&#ing rocks now lol. More open, slightly more edgey/bright and more in your face big sounding.

But for you in my opinion you should try looking into the Ceramic Nailbomb if you want something like the Miracleman but with more top end clarity, slightly less bass, a little less tight and slightly mid scooped or the Coldsweat if you want something that sounds like the CWP but with less bass, scooped mids and more articulate top end.

Have a good one :P

(( Edit )) : No idea on the 8 string though lol. Never played one  :?

This is overrated.  I tried that with an Anderson HN3+ that I put in a LP copy, as I couldn't get pinch harmonics to save my life.  Definitely a fundamental mismatch, but switching to a meg pot did nothing for harmonics or to tighten the bass.

I had a c-pig in my 7 string which is mahogany but I only have a 60 Vypyr with 6505 modelling.  I found it too dark.  A shame as it was the only issue for me.  It roared though.  I've since gone active which works for me.

That's not even what a higher value pot is supposed to do. All it does is let more high frequencies through. Someone misinformed you if you thought it would do anything to the lows, or to the harmonics.

I misspoke; I was trying to brighten up the tone so I could have more highs to work with (cranking the treble on my amp just made the highs fizzy), because turning up the highs on my amp made things fizzy.  The harmonics thing was just a general frustration I had with that pickup, I shouldn't have mentioned it.  I've never tried using a 300k or 250k to cut the highs, which might have made my experience with the JB more enjoyable.  Maybe I'm off on this one.   :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  What about the Nailbomb?  I saw on another board where Tim made a comment about how great the Nailbomb sounded in the exact same guitar I'm playing, a PRS SE Mike Mushok signature baritone.  Of course, that doesn't mean he dialing in the sound I'm wanting, but with the warmth of mahogany and the excessive mids and gain of the 5150, the Nailbomb could be a good fit.

I just put an Apig into my Schecter hellraiser v1 tuned to drop c. It's mahogany and I had great results. Works a little better boosted though. Boosted it with a way huge angry troll and and a Blackstar od. Both sounded great, I prefer the troll over the two. The amp I am using is a Krankenstein+ full stack.
