Amp Help
« on: April 07, 2012, 03:48:56 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some help to decide on which amp I should buy.... I have a budget of £2k (but may be able to stretch to about £2300, but I may get the silent treatment from my better half!) which needs to cover amp head and cab. I play mostly classic rock and Doom (not sludgy Doom) and my axe is a Gibson Les Paul. I tune all strings down a full step. Being based in Belfast, there is a limited number of amps I can try, as most guitar shops only stock a limited choice.

So far i have had/tried the following, which haven't done it for me:

- Blackstar Series One (too out and out metal)
- Mesa Dual Rec (too American sounding)
- Orange Rockerverb 50 (not sure it's got enough low end focus with only being 50 watts)

I am really only after an amp that has one great rock sound, which needs to be a british voicing. I don't need reverb, effects loops, scooped mids etc. etc.... but it would be great if the amp had the ability to be biased by myself. On my most wanted list are the following, but i have never been able to try them:

- Egnater Tourmaster (possibly over complicated with 4 channels)
- Rockerverb 100 (with DIVO fitted)
- Marshall YJM100

I would be very grateful for any advice on the above, or any other amps... The sound i have in my head is Zakk era Ozzy, but to be honest i think £1250 is too expensive for a JCM 800 reissue and I am not keen on buying a second hand amp.

Would one of the Splawn amps work for you? http://www.splawnguitars.com/amps08.htm

Tone World in Manchester stock them - http://www.toneworld.co.uk/amplifiers-c11/splawn-m37

I also second the JCM 800 2203.  If you are in the UK, they are affordable, they sound awesome, and can do doom & rock with no problem.

I think the low end of the Rockerverb is a to loose for doom. The Thunderverb might perform this style better.

1+ for Splawn...You won´t be disapointed...QR is pure Marshall and 3 gears allow you go from plexi to super hot rod JCM 800...Nitro is darker (with KT88 even more) and better for heavier stuff..It´s Marshallish as well but with influence of Diezel or Bogner...Superb build quality...
have CWP,MM...had AM,CS,VHII,NB,PK,HD...

Marsham JVM? Absolute Versatility!

And as Madsakre said, get a JCM800. They're only a couple hundred above the £500 mark, and put it this way, if you get another brand of amp, your not going to get the Marshall 800 reissue sound anyways. At least buying a stock JCM800 will get you a lot closer.

How about having an amp custom made? There's plenty of good builders, and Toe-Knee on this forum has built some pretty nice Soldano Slos.

Wow thanks for the kind words.

I agree with what has been said so far. If you want the 800 type tones your best bet would be some variation on the marshall voicing or a used 800.
