Not all of us have the equipment, or the desire, to record our ropey playing for the world.  For some of us, talking about gear, not actually playing, can be just as enjoyable

But to be honest, if anything's been in decline it's the Pickups, Tech etc threads rather than anything off-topic.  There are still lots of new threads in those on-topic sections, but not as much input or discussion as there used to be (at least, that's my impression).

That's not really surprising though, is it? The BKP line is maybe 60-70% the same as it was when the forum was young, something like that? How many new things can you say about the same pickups? Same for tech really, and to a lesser extent guitars, amps & effects.

That's true, but there's still a never-ending flow of new people, even if they're asking the same old questions.

Problem is, we old-timers can't be bothered to answer them any more - so we're contributing to the decline of "on-topic" discussion, like it or not.

Certain former members would answer those threads with a curt "use the Search facility", but I don't think it's really fair to expect someone who's only just arrived on the forum to be able to do that effectively.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Ive been here since 2005 and i still find the search function to be pretty much useless.

Even after searching you can end up flipping through 5-10 pages of stuff that is unrelated to get to something that is barely related to what you were searching for

Let's be positive here folks, this is the best guitarists forum on the internet and I should know, I've been banned from a few. There's no egos flying round, no one bangs on about how they're better than everyone else, there's a lot of people offering very good advice and a continual undercurrent of humour and good-natured p1ss-taking.

And there's pretty pictures of Stratocasters.

And Telecasters.

And other guitars. But I don't look at those.

I'm with Frank on this one.

This forum changes with the seasons, who's online, what's happening in the outside world (music related or not). But basically it's the same place...

I'm not as active as I was a while back - I've got less I want to say and, perhaps more relevant, less I feel that I need to know or find out about now. I suspect many feel much the same as me. It's no problem, though, I post when I feel moved to do so or have something useful to pass on.

On here, I get music stuff and I get drivel (both serious and amusing) from folks who I know are into the same thing as me - music and guitars. That's good in my book. I also get to watch the odd argument and people getting worked up because they're misunderstanding each other - that's quite entertaining too (once I'd learnt that it's unlikely they'll listen to each other just because of anything I can type)...

Some people move on, and some of them want to slam the door when they do. So what? The rest of us are still here, we might miss them, but it's up to them. By the way, has anyone else noticed that, in general, the folk who go loudly have often been quite crochety (and therefore slightly less pleasant to be around) leading up to their departure? Someone said earlier (DMoney, I think) that this is the internet, not the real world. We're not seeing the real people here - we've all got big stuff happening to us in the real world, and we all bring that in here to a greater or lesser extent. It has a different effect on different people, depending on what they  think they're getting out of this place. If someone p1sses me off (either directly, or through how they're talking to someone else), I try to take into account that there's a real human-being there somewhere, just like me, with a bunch of pressures they don't want and no f@cker listening to them in the real world...

But basically, (leaving aside the help and advice side of things for a moment) this place is an escape from our other sh1t. When your chosen escape ends up being part of your "other sh1t", that's when you have to move on. It happens to us all sooner or later.

It's a cool place, it's friendly, it works. For me, it ain't broke. :D

^ +1. also the more i learn the less i think i know so i'm less confident about replying and making suggestions about gear (that's probably a good thing for the forum  ).

+1 on afghan dave's great post a couple of pages back.

+1 on mark's post as well. I happen to *like* the off-topic and politics threads. I also think i manage to stay reasonably civil, too.

i don't see why a few other people who want it banned should get to stop them when they claim it's adversely affecting the forum, when for plenty of others like me, banning it would adversely affect the forum.

I also want to see proof, as many other people have asked for (ironically enough, or maybe not so ironically, it's often the ones who have been here the longest who think this place hasn't changed all that much), that this place actually is getting any worse. I don't think it is (or at least, if it is, it's not because of the off-topic stuff).

oh and i use 1.5mm gator grips

Oh yeah, I forgot, Dunlop nylon thingies (.88 I think)

I don't think anyone's actually asking for anything to be banned, have they? Or did I miss it?

If I did, I vote for no banning....

And while we're at it, I want to be allowed to smoke in the pickups and guitar forums... oh, I do already - I forgot... (you're all gonna die cos of me and my anti-social thoughtlessness!!)

yeah that's true (the banned thing). sorry if i implied they had. it was just easier to type "banned" than, "said they didn't really like it that much and didn't like the forum as much as a result"

I think we all go through phases, really. Some of us constantly buying gear are probably going to be more drawn to the gear forums. I'm skint, and unlikely to be otherwise for some time, so I tend to look at the nice pictures in there but chat in the off-topic forums. Keeping your foot in as it were and seeing what people are up to. One day I'll be buying another guitar or an amp or whatever, and I'll be back in the gear ones contributing rather than lurking.

And like dave_mc says above, I don't think there's anything wrong with liking the off-topic ones more, or even the more serious threads within them. We're all grown-ups and don't take the huff (or at least for more than a couple posts) even if it might read like it's hostile on occasion (which I think is very rare). Plus we're a slightly odd peer group. There's one major interest that pulls us together but the demographic is very scattered that aside. So it's interesting to see what folks think about stuff.

Some thoughts:

I for one can't afford much gear at the moment due to the downturn and am not really posting so much as in better times. I assume this is the case for others.

We've discussed alot of the common topics a few times now already - Tim's not really expanding the range at the rate we discuss the pickups (how could he ;) ) so with the search function and so on, less gear posts. Its a bit boring to read similar 'which pickup threads', though I do respond to a few of them, but not most of them as I used to.

My music 'mood' is shifting from guitar based music back to using synths and samplers to make car alarm noises.

Maybe due to a combination of all of these things my tonal search feels like its coming to an end. A strat, a V, a couple of pedals and a Marshall or Sansamp will keep me happy! I do have this forum to thank in part to turning me around to strats, which I really like now.

I think I only ever read the off topic posts now, occasionally going into the gear forums. I'm not really that interested in guitar gear any more, I just play my guitars every few days and that's about it! cba to pore over the latest gear etc like I used to.

Don't worry... Philly made one of them up to sound cool and hip... Dmoney and Shag called his bluff by inventing a a whole load of others to go with it... all three threw in a couple of real bands to throw you off the scent (not sure which ones are which, myself)...

They're really talking about the Dave Clark Five and Tony Hatch...

Can't fool me, chaps :D

Rival Schools had a sorta comeback album last year didn't they? A pal sent me a track to transcribe for him, I expected port-hardcore and got dreadful, whiney indie drivel. Awful.

I like Gorilla Biscuits. Never got on with Helmet or Rollins Band.

I prefer the GB 7" to the LP. But the LP has its place for sure, and its pretty influential.
Rival Schools for me is hit & miss. The early stuff was unused Quicksand tracks from when Quicksand started going a bit softer. They have a totally unreleased LP I think, which you can download if you're inclined. They did just put out a new record, but the first promo video for it was for a track off the Quicksand rarities collection thats been kicking about... so just how 'new' some of that stuff is, i don't know. Confusing! Helmet have some bangers, as do Rollins Band, but then Rollins Band have tracks with funk/soul diva backing vocals....
