Of those bands I like Helmet and Rollins Band the best, although both somewhat tailed off in quality on their later albums.  I had really high expectations of Handsome, but the album only had a couple of standout tracks IMO.

I remember Helmet being quite a shock to me, back in my Kerrang!-reading days.  I'm sure they weren't the first band of their type, but I'd never seen a short-haired "metal" band before, I didn't know what to make of it  .  Then I bought Meantime and was blown away by it.

Of course a couple of years later everyone had cut their hair off, for a while.  Then they grew it back again.

Agreed. I couldn't get into that whole Handsome LP. Tom Capone came over with Fearless Vampire Killers (Cro-Mags) a while ago and some of my friends complained about his guitar playing, but they don't really like his playing on anything. When they came back the brought AJ Novello from leeway. That guy is a great player.

Are you following all this, Keith?

Thanks for posting those links, Dmoney. I'll see if I can sneak time this evening to check them out to see what you guys are on about. I've heard of someone called Henry Rollins - is there any connection with the Rollins Band? Otherwise it's all way over my head at the moment

Were you ever into Life of Agony?  I think Keith Caputo is a great singer/songwriter but I always thought they were let down a bit by Joey Z, he always seemed a distinctly "average" guitar player (not that I'm in a position to judge!)

I love Life Of Agony. River Runs Red is a great Record. Ugly and Soul Searching Sun have great moments too. Like Lost at 22 and Angry Tree. I think the bassist wrote a lot of their stuff originally and then Keith had more influence with song writing later. I might be wrong though. Keith Caputo is now Mina Caputo, in case you hadn't heard about that. I think LOA as a whole was awesome but I can understand an argument suggesting it was greater than the sum of the parts, perhaps. They tailed off as well. I don't like many things about Broken Valley.

Yeah, I like all three of those albums.  I don't think they ever did an album which was absolutely blinding from beginning to end, but the good stuff is very good indeed.

Keith Caputo is now Mina Caputo, in case you hadn't heard about that.

I had no idea until just now!  Doesn't totally surprise me - there was always something "different" about him, he seemed very vulnerable for a rock singer.  I wondered if it was a sexual identity thing.... turned out it was a gender identity thing!

They tailed off as well. I don't like many things about Broken Valley.

I'd forgotten about that one, only played it once.  Now that I think about it, the CD had some kind of embedded software which totally $%&#ed up my computer.  :?

Me too!  I'll be 48 this year.....

Have to admit I've pretty much stopped keeping up with new music now.  In fact I'm regressing to listening to '70s stuff nearly all the time.  Which isn't really a bad thing, but I do feel I should make some effort to be aware of what's going on.

Everything I listen to these days that's modern tends to sound like it was made in the 70's anyhow...

Coming up on 40, so it's not really my era, but I had an older brother and I listened to all his records so I was brought up on Rainbow, Sabbath, Purple, AC/DC, Kiss and the like. I find myself playing all the old albums more and more and complaining that they don't make music like they used to...

shitee, even I got those strong tendencies...and I am coming up on 21 for f*cks sake^^

In my case it´s my fathers fault (he is a few years over 50 now). Had me grow up with Jethro Tull, Black Sabath (rocked that before I could walk!), Uria Heep, etc. plus some classical music at times, so that very much formed me. Combine that with the ocasional breakfast radio that played only every the same pop songs for middle aged calm people and you got my taste. The rock thing did by far the most though, the rest just lend me a certain openness and occasional stroll into the pop world which can come in handy with songwriting. And I love powerpalads!

I really listen to a lot of different stuff though nearly all genres, but my main taste is still old school rock and metal, or at least things that are stronly infused with that.

With that taste you can imagine how I was kinda strange in that regard growing up. From first class to now, always the same basic shite. Everyone listens to chart music, gansta rap, etc and I (with some exeptions) listen to Iron Maiden, Metallica, Apocalyptica, Dream Theater and all that, sometimes even on vinyl....
Everytime I talked with someone about music I felt real old, even at the age of 10 xD
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
