Pickup Similar to EMG 85
« on: February 11, 2006, 05:31:08 AM »
I have an Edwards Les Paul that has a SD JB and '59 pickup. I'm just not diggin the JB. It's really bright to me, even in the Les Paul. I have EMG 85's in my other guitar and really like the sound of them. I want a passive pickup that has the low end crunch that the 85 has. Any recommendations on a bridge pickup and a neck pickup to match it?

Isn't the EMG-85 supposed to be a PAF-ish sounding pickup?

If so, I'd recommend Abraxis V or Crawler.

The warpig is often compared to the 81. In fact I find it closer to the 85! The miracle man is the more-81-than-81 pickup, IMO.

Warpig. No question.

You don't say what sort of music you are wanting to play.  If you want something that gives the sound that the SD JB should have, then get a matched set of the new HolyDivers.  They are incredible pickups.  If you want something heavier, then I would look at either the Crawlers or if you want a lot of bottom end, the Warpig.  If you go with the Warpig, you might like the combo I have, which is a Mississippi Queen neck pickup.

If you want a passive with plenty of low end crunch and a simular output to the EMG 81 go for the warpig.

I was mainly wanting a pickup for metal. The one thing I don't like about the warpig is it looks fugly from those pictures. Does it not come in any different color than that distressed nickel?

you can get them in plain covers (or uncovered) as well, the warpigs thread in the gallery has a pic of a black uncovered set, for example.I think you have to email about them, though.

Also, if you don't like the distressed covers you have horrible taste.

Going on tone, I don't actually have any EMGs, I've only heard other people playing them, so I can't really compare them. The pigs are great for the sort of tone I'd expect from 85s though.

For a neck pickup to match, I'd suggest another warpig. :)

Hi, this is my Warpig and Mississippi Queen combo.  They are in raw nickel.  I think this is the greatest combination for heavy rock.  I put a push pull switch on the Warpig for Series/Parallel switching and the parallel tone is great for clean stuff (there is so much bottom end in the 'pig that you don't loose it in parallel).

I have double screw coils in my Nailbomb to give more bottom end (like the Warpig).  It is not as chugging, but it is no slouch!  I tend to think of it as a bit more 80's heavy sound though.

You can order your pickups in any finish you want from the BK range.  There is even burnt chrome, which looks great in the right guitar.
