my riff raff/mule set is covered and it's much more open sounding than any uncovered pickup I ever had
covered pickups only get muffled if they are overly potted and are already compressed sounding pickups
the difference is quite subtle without the covers and for such bright sounding models, you won't miss anything by having covers
when I had the covered riff raff in the '96 mccarty, I was always amazed about how that was the most open sounding guitar I ever played
I truly miss that tone, but I'm a les paul guy and I just can't get used to anything else

My Mule-set is covered and sounds awesome: open, deep, dynamic, fat, yet crispy.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
