Good guitar stores in Essex?
« on: June 24, 2012, 12:18:29 PM »
Hi all

so I'm moving from Birmingham to Colchester next week. Fake tan is packed and I'm practising omitting the "t" already. But the thing that is missing is any experience of local guitar stores in the area - are there any you can recommend, or is London the next stop for that? Any around Liverpool station - it seems easy to commute there?

One of the most interesting ones is Peach Guitars , but you need a car to get there really.

I'm just up the road in Ipswich, gigged a lot in Colchester actually- it's a shitehole.  There are a few shops but nothing really amazing, especially seeing that you're about an hour away from London on the train.  Just enjoy the mental slappers and the aggressive squaddies.

Peach looks like a really good shop, but it does seem to be in the middle of nowhere so, as Jon says, difficult to get to.

I have some friends who live really close by, but I've never had the cheek to ask them to give me a lift there!

There used to be a few good shops in Colchester 20 years ago, but many are gone.

Trevor Durant still has a good store

I'm actually just outside Colchester as I type this - visiting the G/F

+ 1 (2?) for Peach and Trevor Durant.  Peach has loads of high end gear, loads of PRS, Dr Z, Suhr etc.

There's also Holiday Music (Strings Direct) down  my way, but it's never got a massively impressive stock list.  There's PMT in Southend too, and they always have reasonable stuff, although a little limited again.

Peach and Trevor Durant are probably the best.

Gig gear in Harlow just off the M11. That's a big shop with a lot of stock.

PMT in Romford. I have been there once or twice and they seem like nice blokes.

Colchester has probably the best music scene in Essex. :)

there are 3 guitar shops in the town iirc there's a funny old packed one, the Allegro is a chain found in Chelmsford, Southend and such and the one just up the road from that was a bored old bloke who didn't seem that interested in selling me an amp.

Peach is packed with goodies and about 2 miles from Braintree Freeport station. Lovely gear there..

If you are coming to Colchester then you must come and see The Fellowship of Funk (featuring Guthrie Govan) when they play at the bassment in Chelmsford. It used to be every thursday with Dave Kilminster, Lee Hodgson depping when Guthrie was playing other gigs.
