Mississippi Queens in a PRS McCarty?
« on: June 24, 2012, 03:41:46 PM »
In short does anyone think this is a good idea? Since I got my DGT I'm finding that it has become my go-to humbucking guitar and the McCarty is not getting the attention it used to. I'm thinking of two approaches

1) Put a set of Mississippi Queens into the McCarty
2) Try to swap the McCarty for a McSoapy and then possibly replace the pickups in that for something BKP if the stock ones don't do it for me.

I'm open to all suggestions and ideas.

Thanks.

I personally found my MQ a bit too hot for a true P90 tone - great if you want Doom-y stuff but not so good for rootsy-bluesy stuff.  They may have changed the spec since then though?

McSoapies aren't that common/popular, although the odd few do crop up, but they're always a bit pricey IMHO.

Maybe try MQs and see how you get on, or even the Manhattans?

Thanks for that, Dave. I certainly don't want doomy tone - rootsy/bluesy was exactly what I was looking for. The Manhattans are an interesting idea if the consensus is that the MQs are too hot. Hmmm, tricky.

Like I say, they may be fine for you, but the one I had was too thick sounding for my tastes.  I can't remember what the DC resistance was to compare with the current spec.

Tom and HTH have/had MQs in LPs, so it might be worth seeing what they have to say?

Sounds a good idea to me (I haven't tried either, so I don't know how hot the MQs are).

You're bound to lose money if you sell/trade the McCarty to get a McCarty Soapbar.  Must be worth trying some humbucker-sized P-90s first!
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

In my McCarty, the RiffRaff sounds killer! You will leave your DGT alone with a RR in a McC. :)
