the neck pickup is ultra-beefy and bassy, and with tone rolled down a bit has a great jazz tone, in my opinion. but NOT playing jazz mine is just a guess, of course...  :P

i think an HSP90 can be much more versatile in neck position... the Stockholm is actually a very good idea. the MQ can be a surprisingly effective counterpart to the WP (i use it in a LP studio with a ceramig pig, go figure...), but if you prefer a more balanced combo then go swede! :)

ah, by the way, hello everyone. i've been away for more than a year (if you haven't noticed...), and it's nice to catch many old "faces" around!

Thanks gents, the Stockholm (or maybe MQ) is definitely appealing to me!

I do want a fat, thick neck pickup tone and a P-90 can do that in its own way.  I'm still not sure if the Warpig neck is going to sound too much like the bridge (or maybe it'll simply sound "too much"!)

This is all new territory for me, I may have to do what I never normally do and listen to some clips!  :o

Meanwhile, I have at long last decided to get a neck (alnico ) warpig to drop into the neck of a Jazzer.   I will leave a soundclip when I've recieved it - and had a day to experiment.  The best way to assuage my long held curiosity - is to actually hear the result for myself.  This should be interesting ...  8)

Wow, go for it Derek!

What finish have you opted for, presumably not camo or battle-worn or whatever?   Nickel (or gold?) with screw polepieces?

Spot on  Philly !   :)  I've asked for  the ever popular 'Wolf in sheep's clothing' option - Gold case , gold screw tops - and instead of the strings and pick,  I've asked for a bottle of B.K.P. smelling salts - plus (  obviously ) some sort of amulet to protect me from dark forces.  To allow an effective range of adjustment, I should have asked for the lesser known 3" leg and adjusting screws option.

I noted that a couple of Jazz box makers have used the double screw pole / Alnico V type of pickup in their Jazz boxes. I appreciate that theirs is about 1/3 of the impedance of the Warpig,  but I genuinely wanted to hear what a fairly standard alnico Warpig could do - as opposed to some massively customised version . The only appropriate  'distressing' that would apply, would probably be Pernod and  black coffee stains , with possible  'Gitanes' burns.
I think I might be 'distressed' enough when the Jazz amp hits the back wall...  :o

i've got just one of 'em, in a basswood RG, and - judging from mine - it doesn't sound very much like the bridge... bassier to the point of being a bit muddy on distorted tones (the bridge is NEVER muddy unless downtuned to B, maybe even C, and below), and very, very thick - but a bit too dark for my taste - on cleans. actually i prefer quite articulate neck pickups, and that's why i love HSP90s, that - dark and full sounding as they can be - retain that awesome single coilish attack. i've got neck Stockholms on a LP studio and an LTD EC1000, and they sounds perfect... quite hot but very bluesy.

Actually, I quite like the sound of that - I don't mind a bit of mud, although I don't like "boominess" on the bass strings.

I don't like bright neck pickups, but I do like the way single-coils go a bit "soft" with a lot of distortion.  I think I'm leaning towards the Stockholm.

(Should wait until I actually have the guitar before making these decisions, shouldn't I!    )

Philly - I think you'd be surprised at how nice the neck WP is
It can push an amp fine , but it is one of those pickups that rolls back really nicely  via the volume pot

Also played clean it is one of the best  sounding  cleans in a neck pickup
remember that the 17.4k ohm resistance reading is via 45 gauge wire - so the same number of turns of 42 gauge will be a much lower dc reading

Im very interested to hear what you make of the Bridge Warpig when you get it- i have been tempted by in in the past but always was put off by people saying it was way too high output and too bassy, etc - really curious to hear how it works in that guitar.

Ah !  The somewhat rare 'Buddy Greco' signature model . You must have bid hard for that one.  They only made one - and didn't tell him.

Cool thing, pigs will be very interresting in that one. Very exited to hear what a bloke like you thinks of them (I actually for some reason think youŽll be positivly suprised).

I too have been eying the pigs for some time and should you end up liking them IŽll be save to get some too.

That is if you ever get around to actually installing and playing them...
