Just heard that Jon Lord from Deep Purple has died. Sad.

He was the greatest. No one else came close.

I've loved Deep Purple for more than 30 years and I really wanted Jon Lord to live forever. Utterly irreplaceable. We've lost a true genius today.

Seeing this thread title was the first I've heard of it, quite a shock.

That's terrible news, always sad when we get these "RIP" threads but in this case it's someone I really am a fan of.  Deep Purple and its "offshoot" bands were my gateway into the whole world of rock music back in 1979.

I heartilly echo what you and Frank said ;  my first 'real' album was Deep Purple 'Made In Japan' - and the amazingly zesty Organ work and general  musicianship of Jon Lord , was the glue that held it all together. Even when they evolved onto the more accessible 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer' - Jon was there , as fresh and inventive as ever. The loss of a true legend - and one suspects a 'Jolly nice chap'.  Rest in peace Jon.

A true great of the music world, "child in time" remains one of my favourite songs of all time.

Like Philly, the Deep Purple family of bands were my introduction into rock and metal

I feel very lucky that my Dad took me to see Deep Purple in Plymouth when John Lord came on halfway through the gig and stayed for the rest of it, sharing the keys with Don Airey. It was a moment of pure magic and will stay with me until I lose my marbles, heh.

We have lost an innovator and a genius, R.I.P.

Certainly the template for all hard rock keyboardists. I love his style (at least in the footage I've seen) - overdriving his tone, shaking the keyboards and all that. Great player and songwriter too.

I have to say that I generally regard keyboards as something to be avoided, or at best tolerated, in rock music!

There are very few keyboard players I actually enjoy listening to - Jon Lord, Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep and maybe one or two others.  That wheezy, groaning Hammond organ tone was just brilliant.
