Blackhawk Clips with a valve amp.

Hey guys.

I'm on the edge of buying a Blackhawk for my alder bodied swirled strat that's got a one piece maple neck.

My only problem is I really aren't sure about the tonality as everything I've heard has been done with a modeller which imho really isn't representative at all.

There was of course Jonathans clip which was great just totally not really my style.

It will be used mainly for 80s thrash with a modern twist to the tone like the newer exodus & testament albums. I can already get these kinda tones from my existing guitars with the Miracle man in or emgs.

I'll chime in and say that when I tremolo pick with mine it sounds off to me on the E string so that might not be the best for thrash. And I really want to put up some heavier clips but I haven't had a good chance to mic my amp. Perhaps tomorrow.

In what way would you say it sounds off? Just unconventional? Or kinda phasey?

The word I would use is spanky. It'a like I'm continuously slapping a bass string. Maybe this is how trem picking sounds through an amp when the player is uneven with it.  :oops: I'm not a fan of tremolo picked riffs either FYI I was just going through the motions of what the Blackhawk can or can't do. That could be why it sounds wrong to me, but I've definitely heard trem picked riffs that sound right. If you're practiced at it I can imagine it would sound a lot closer to normal.

I take this back. I realized I had my treble too high for it to sound right. Brought it back to 1 o'clock and sounds great for tremolo picking.

I have found that this pickup is really good at bringing any slight issues with intonation and setup, which seemingly becomes more audible in my experience. Whether that is just the nature of the pickup's sensitivity or not I am not sure, but my guitar has had a lot more attention to detail put into the setup, as it was a lot more apparent in the sound while playing.
