Having my eye on Warpigs
« on: July 20, 2012, 11:28:00 PM »
Hello guys, im new, so since we now know eachother, lets anwser my question!
I heard BKP are great but unfortunatley they cost quite a lot of money, so i want to be 100% sure if this is the thing im going for before spending it. As in post title, i had my eye on Warpigs, sound samples are good, and i love how its advertised that they have "mid range grind". Basically i am going for old school death metal sound, like Carcass (Symphonies and Necroticism), i'd like to add more brutality to it though:P. I play 24.75 scale Les Paul Body Shape guitar (VGS Eruption), honestly its great guitar for the price but i feel that it could be more grindy, and stuff. Going to buy Peavey 6505+ combo as i have been recommended such on other forums. So, main question is, should i get Warpigs, or would other pickups be better? Probably i dont need amazing cleans and dont tire me with anything non-extreme metal. EDIT: If i would buy pickups i would buy a calibrated set, 3 pots and 0.22uf capacitor.

I think you'd love the alnico warpig. It's good for everything you want it for and has great cleans too. It's only negative would be if you wanted in your face presence in the trebles which just isn't the warpig at all lol. Trebles are sweet sounding and toned down vs the mids and lows.

My only concern would be if your guitars raw acoustic sound is too fat sounding but if it isn't go AWP.

If your worried about the grind try the ceramic warpig!

Here are some clips off youtube that made me decide AWP.

Nailbomb in a Charvel then Warpig in the fender with a peavey 5150

Lespaul with AWP's

My 2 cents :)

By the way. If your gonna get the AWP get some 1 meg pots. It's the combo i have on my guitar at the moment. They will boost the mids and treble presence and make the pickup sound a lot more open. Won't make it too harsh since the AWP doesn't have much trebs to begin with lol.

Damn thats some really brutal stuff, and too bad Warpig doesnt have much treble, couse i like treble for thrashy fast riffs, sound on 3rd video is really like orbital bombardment:D
Probably when i get bit more money ill buy Alnico Warpigs and 0.22uf capacitor, where would i get 1 meg pots though? And should all pots be 1 meg, or can i have combinations?

If you like treble - look to the ceramic warpig - tighter with a more cutting edge

But does this still have such big mid grind/bass?
Also i believe treble could be added with eq. so probably getting "br00tz" from alnico.

1 meg-ohm pots

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Potentiometers/Alpha_Control_Pots.html

Personally i wish i didn't have a cr@ppy amp so i could show you what my guitar sounds like with the 1 meg-ohm pots. You will get your treble/presence boost with the pots along with an added "open" feeling. Adding trebs from EQ would work but not as good as finding the right pickup.

Feline is right though as i also have the ceramic warpig. They handle the low end differently though. Both have massive amounts of low end. Both can handle the fast playing (( guitar depending )) but the ceramic can handle it better because it's tighter.

How would you describe the open feeling? Open as in non-tight sounds or what?
I think i should just get Alnico Warpigs with 550k pots and just lower the bass/boost treble in eq. After all, not only guitar affects the tone. I dont think i want the open sound (Dont even know what does that mean.)

best way to describe what a 1 meg pot does to a guitars sound is to take a blanket, put it on your amp, play your guitar for a bit, then take it off and that's the difference between a lower pot and a higher pot.

same tightness and all that but it's something you just have to experience or hear a back to back to really get it.

But it's all good though lol. Those 550k pots will do fine regardless. The 1 meg pot thing is just something I did to alleviate the AWP's lack of presence in the top end.

As always my 2 cents :)

Well probably will get ceramic then, i dont like closed sound, like sound when you add too much mids/too low treble and play lowest strings(at least on my old cr@ppy amp) and since you say ceramic handles fast speed better (i love to tremolo pick, and play very fast) and i wont have to mess with 1 meg pots and eq it the way i like.
