I would have said the very same thing a few weeks back, not having listened to him for years. But I recently saw some old BBC performances of his, and that has obviously coloured my current thinking :lol:

The music was still the same, not quite as appealing to me as I remember, but he does seem to have suffered more on the "oh dear, 80s" looks-front than some others might. (It might be because he wasn't happy having to look like that at the time? Who knows...)


And, Cilla Black, the young, singing one... oooo.... I'd have been very happy to have found her on my birthday list.

I had a big crush on her in the days of the Cilla Black Show.

The slightly, er, brasher lady that did Blind Date and all... no thanks.

Mind you, I also liked Des O'Connor :lol:

I can just about remember the Cilla Black and Des O'Connor shows - but only in the sense that I remember them existing, I can't recall any of the actual content.

But I never liked either of them as singers!  In recent years, I like Des as a host/personality, but I think Cilla is a right old cow!

Haven't really mentioned this before, but in my early teens I was a massive ELO fan.  Their mid-'70s albums, especially A New World Record and the (huge-selling) Out Of The Blue were really good.

Discovery was the one which started to put me off - it seemed over-produced (in retrospect, so were the earlier albums!  :lol: ), there were some dud songs and it was revealed that the string section generally didn't play on the records, instead being replaced by (horror of horrors) synthesisers.  I was not impressed.

And then I discovered Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow....

I am finding this thread very depressing. Many of  the songs that were No 1 when you were born seem like they were out not that long ago to me- which makes me feel very old.
