looking for a distortion pedal to beef my laney lc30 up a bit...

seen the jekyll and hyde and looks pretty kool, lots of controls so i get the idea it could be quite versatile... i think i remember ratrod saying hes got one? anyway, just wondering if anyones had any experience with them and if so what are they like....

I dont have a clue about the J&H, but for a similar price you could go boutique and get a Homebrew electronics Big-D . It is one of the few US made pedals sold at a fair price in the UK

BigD (TO had a great review sometime back)

5 modes

1. Tubescreamer
2. Tubescreamer hotrodded
3. Marshall stack type distortion
4. Heavier Marshall stack type distortion
5. Fuzzy distortion

Add to this a Soft/Hard clippin option (10 options so far)

Add to this a footswitchable extra gain stage that fattens the tone significantly (adjustable gain).

Sounds more or less like 20 different settings, all of which are usable and very very good depending on the situation.

other pedal i was considering- toadworks death rattle and maybe their 'enveloope' as well...

and the last couple i was seriosuly considering was the MXR blue box... damn that sounds so cool! and the Homebrew-E. UFO fuzz is cool as well...

what do you think? theres too many pedals!?!?!!?!

I had a head-to-head of Death Rattle vs BigD, the BigD was much better to my ears.

Hi Sambo,

I think getting an OD or distortion pedal to beef up your amp is a great idea.
I have the privelege of living very close to one of the premier boutique pedal shops in the world: 30th Street Guitars in NYC.

Here are a couple of pics of what the place looks like:

There are so many choices out there when it comes to overdrive and distortion pedals, both solid state and valve.

What kind of sound, specifically, are you looking for?

From my own experience, I think that the Jeckyl and Hyde pedal is a joke, but you may love it. Best thing is to try it out and see.

For versatility, you basically have 3 pedals:
> HBE Big D
> Time Machine
> Roger Mayer Voodoo-1

Personally, I think that the HBE sounds the best of the bunch.

Not to murk up the waters further, but if you already like the sound of your amp, have you considered getting a clean boost or a compressor pedal? These will retain your guitar and amp's tone, but will push the amp into overdrive quicker, as well as giving you more sustain.

I basically use 3 pedals, all from HBE, depending on the situation:
> Big D
> Dos Mos Boost/Buffer
> CPR compressor

ok thanks for all the info guys.

a boost pedal did cross my mind actually because (as i keep saying) im loving my crate's tone at the moment but its solid state and when i turn up the volume it just becomes a bit weak and kind of 'airy' lol - hard to explain... anyway i was thinking that getting a boost pedal would beef up the tone that i already like so that when i need to turn it up the basic tone is kept but just fattend out and made fuller... (thats the conecpt of a boost pedal right?)...

anyone got any recommendations on boost pedals? the toadworks 'MEAT' looks quite cool but that was basically the only one ive had a proper look at....

seems like the big-d is definately a good option- specifically for my laney which needs some more versatility. for the crate though im starting to think that all i need is a boost.

P.S damn T.O your so lucky living near a shop like that.

oh yer and the kind of sound im looking for: well my band is kind of classic rock verging on slightly heavier stuff (not really metal) so thats the kind of tone im looking for.... the problem is we're not a specific genre so there is no specific sound im going for... hence the reason for needing versatility- basically im looking for an all out 'rock' pedal.

oh yer and 155 quid- corr blimey that would take a while to raise... i know its not THAT steep for a pedal but since ive been browsing sites that use dollars (

) it seems so much..

BTW Sambo, i got an LC30II and i am using the BigD, it fits the amp perfectly imho, either as a distortion pedal, or as overdrive pedal.

ahhh excellent... looks like big d is the way to go for the laney then. now i just want a boost pedal for my crate... OR a fuzz pedal to give it some more versatility...
