I'm only asking because I think my pickups are touching the sides of the route. I had to route my carvin so it could fit BKP's, and the sound is a bit odd. I'm getting a lot of feedback and string ringing compared to my Les Paul which has pickup rings. Does anyone have any idea about this?

One way string ringing can happen is if the pole pieces are quite close to the strings. Is this the case?

you wouldn't use the meat knife on crusty bread but, equally, the serrated knife and straight edge knife aren't going to go through raw meat as quickly

No, not at all. My pickups are quite low.

it is easy for pickups that don't have enough potting to go into feedback if you direct mount and play with a lot of gain (especially in an enclosed space where you can't get away from the amp's speakers).
The body vibrations will run straight through them and microphonic feedback is more easily activated .
The touching on the sides of the cavity only serves to increase the amount of physical contact and vibration transfer

I sometimes revert to doing a more thorough second wax dip if I get this problem - but then I am lucky to have that facility already set up. (I do offer it as a service though).

If they are new BKPs then you could return them and ask for a more intensive wax dip
