Strat single coil set for 96 American strat
« on: September 10, 2012, 03:48:39 AM »
Hey guys.

Having just got nailbomb/mule pickup set for my Epi LP (and completely falling in love with the BKP) I have now got my hands on a Fender strat that I am intending on building up.

Basically, its a 96 standard american Strat (alder body, and thin 'C' maple neck).

I am looking at a set of 59 slab board PU's. What I am after is a thinnish kind of vintage tone, that doesnt really need to be overdriven. kind of a light, early bluesy sound if it is though (I have the Epi for the other meatier stuff).

Am I on the right track for this, or any other ideas?

Cheers guys.

When your strat has a rosewood fretboard, it would be a great choiche. You'd love the Mother's Milk too, they are not much different then the 59 slabboards or the 63 veneer boards. It's a about nuances.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

nuances keep me up at night.   :x

If I spent as much time practising, as I do worrying about tone, I would be world class.

im thinking I might go with the 59 slabboards. Really after that 'dinstinctive' sound.

Maple fingerboard?

Tim recommended the 63 veneer boards for me in that situation. They're voiced to match brighter guitars. Apaches would also be great for this (even more vintage, with a slightly fatter sounding, though low output, bridge).

You said it didn't need to be overdriven, so definitely go for vintage output. But rest assured that all those pickups work well under high gain if you ever change your mind!

Bare Knuckles owned: Mules, VHII, Rebel Yells, BKP-91, Strat 63 set, Riff Raffs.

Yeah, if the neck is maple, better the 63 veneer board. The Apaches are great wit a maple neck too, just a different sound. Cleaner and fuller.

Thanks guys,

after much debate, the Mrs has decided for me. am going with the 'Mothers Milk' set.

Basically what we are doing is refinishing, and cleaning up & restoring the guitar, and it will be our 1st borns 1st guitar that he/she learns on in a few years time (how cool of a Father will I be????).

The Mothers Milk set seems to be a great all rounded tone for what I am after.

Now the question remains, RW middle PU, and do I put base plates on these???

Godamn spoilt for choice we are. :(

Let me recommend an alternative for the bridge: Tim (BKP-boss) plays a Apache with a baseplate and two Mother's Milk without baseplate in his strat. The Apache provides way more mids and smoothness in the bridge and pairs nice with the MM's. Baseplates on middle- and neckpickup take away a bit of the authentic tones in my opinion and interferes too much with the balance. I would take RWRP - less noise.

just ordered the set with baseplate on the bridge, and RWRP in the middle (Mother milk set) with pre-assembled scratchplate.

My second set of Bare Knuckles in a month.....this is getting to be a dangerous (and expensive) relationship.
