Strat single coil pickup options (confusion.....!)
« on: September 15, 2012, 05:27:06 AM »
Hi all.
New by that's been doing a lot of reading and getting close to ordering my pickups, but just want some advice from the experts.... Ie. you guys.

I'm building a Warmoth SSS Strat with an Alder body and Birdseye maple neck & fingerboard.

I want a pure Strat sound for funk etc, but also a guitar that can knock your socks off for the heavier stuff (but not metal) hence why I'm going the BKP option and not eg. fender pickups.   But it's gotta sound like a Strat.  The heavy stuff I'm looking at both sounds (intro and especially verse riff) of Higher Ground by RHCP.  I'm playing through a Trace Elliot TC 100 Valve Amp that is beautiful clean and clean overdrive, has a great rock sound and can do the real heavy stuff too. It's been described as the UK's Mesa Boogie.

The boss, (Timbo) has suggested Irish Tours in the neck middle, and a Trilogy Bridge - possibly with base plate.
But I've also been told to do all Trilogies - but I'm scared of losing my vintage sound.  I'm being selfish and want the best of both worlds.....
Any suggestions?

Thanks all in advance.

For anyone that's interested, I'm stuck in Alice Springs - literally the middle of Australia, and go home to my 6 month old baby boy tomorrow.
Seeing as I'm stuck here an extra night; I told my wife I'd be amusing myself by going to the casino (she had a choice between the cas and the brothel....)  just over the river (it only flows once every 2 years - amazing place) and trying to at least come out even on blackjack.
Well, I won enough to cover the next priority of this project.   The case......
I'm after a Fender deluxe tweed start case with the wine red interior.  There's only six left in the country, so I gotta jump on it.

Then the pickups.....  But I still need help first with the options.....  Insert smily confused & bemused dingo's face here.....

Did I mention that I'm using a jewellers drill with an engraving bit to custom make my own Strat pickup covers that are meant to look like bone, or, wait for it - bare knuckles.....

Just follow Tims advice, he's know his pickups. The Trilogy will push more then the IT with a baseplate. Of course the fourth position will be dominated by the TS, but that's all in the game. You have two IT's and the second position for vintage sounds. I understand your needs, I play HSS-strats for that reason.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
