I don't know how this will work in print (I get Guitar World using electrickery on my iPad now) but the current issue has a free PRS supplement with it. Haven't read it in detail yet, and it may not have much in the way of hot news, but there are some pretty pictures and a bit of discussion on recent PRS pickups. Might be worth a gander?

Is it the issue with Billy Gibbons and Dan Auerbach on the cover?  There's no PRS supplement in the print edition.  :(

Ooo dear, I look away for 10 minutes and crazy sh1t happens!

A guitar's a guitar, whether it gets played or not, whether it cost little or much. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and stuff costs what someone is prepared to pay.

I'm sure this is gonna be a monster of an instrument, Dave. Mebbe (ok definitely ) not what I'd go for, but if it floats your boat, and you can afford it, and YOU are happy that it's worth it... that's all that matters...

And people getting shirty because someone's bought a new car!!!... what a load of @rse.

I dunno, people is people... what moves them is what moves them... and it's all in their heads, not yours...  Unless you need something out of them, after a certain point there's no use in you worrying about what's going on their heads...

Enjoy this geetar and flashing it around, that's what it's for :D

I shall certainly enjoy it though  :D

I really don't like this envy culture we have in this country. For some reason it's seen negatively for people to spend the money they've earned on nice things. Which is bullshiteeeeeeeeeeee.

It certainly is.  Mrs Twinfan works VERY hard in her job and has just picked up her new car, which is very nice indeed but it's not a Noble/Ferrari/Porsche etc.  She never mentioned it to anyone before getting it, and only talks about it if asked.

One of our neighbours is now blanking her, and won't even say hello or return a smile  :?  What's that all about?

When people ask what car I drive I always say the old Merc and don't mention the Porker. People can be surprisingly funny about it. What annoys me is that no one would bat an eyelid if it was a new top end Mondeo. Which is about what it's currently worth. It's just this reverse snobbery that's prevalent at the moment.

I'm not sure having "balls" is the way I'd describe it gwEm!

I'm a live-in-the-now kind of person, and right now that guitar is my idea of perfection.

Likewise. My reasons for it I've mentioned before here. It's why I have the nice cars I have. It's also why I've taken a year off to concentrate on things other than work (up to this point I've never not worked). Sure realistically getting another job at the end of it might be interesting, but that's not the point. Life is for living, enjoy it now while you can.

Ah, makes sense.  I guess you get the electronic edition when it comes out in the US, long before the print version reaches the UK.

Yup, I believe so. It showed up late last night so I'm guessing that's the earliest it would be available anywhere. Might not even be on news-stands in the States yet.

It's a Brazilian wood that's used mainly for violin bows.  It's becoming rarer and is now endangered I think, and getting hold of it for guitar making purposes is pretty tough - especially the size needed for neck blanks.

It varies a lot in grade, but the good stuff is very, very resonant.  I've got a pernambuco neck on my Private Stock SC245 and that guitar just rings and sings.  In a very rough test another PS with a mahogany neck sustained a bass E string for around 35-40 seconds.  The SC245 did over a minute.

It also seems to have loads of harmonics going on too.

Because of the price point of PRS', they did (still do to some degree) have that image of being guitars for well-heeled professionals who like to be weekend warriors (and can barely play a note) - it does rub some people up the wrong way.  I've seen such blokes in action in the pubs, thousands of pounds worth of gear and struggling to play a 12 bar blues with any conviction.  Suppose it stems back to earning your stripes as a guitarist and being worthy of the instrument.

As far as I'm concerned, what someone does with their money they've worked their arse off for is their own business.  Some spend it on cars, some going out Fri/Sat/Sun and pissing it up the wall - whatever your poison, its your money and nobody else's business.

I'm always stoney broke and wish I had the kind of cash available that Dave does to buy my dream guitars, but I certainly don't begrudge Dave having what he's got (why the hell should I).

Cheers Ian, it's nice to see I'm not rubbing folk up the wrong way.  I did wonder whether to say what I was buying here on the forum or not, but decided enough folks had met me to know that I'm not some doctor or lawyer with a trophy in need of displaying  ;)

I'm very aware that I'm in a fortunate financial position right now.  I can guarantee that won't always be the case, and not having kids certainly helps with the disposable income thing.

Why do lawyers always get a bad rap for collecting guitars?  I am a lawyer (although trying to check out of that particular Hotel California at present) and my guitars live next to my sofa where they get played all the time.

I guess the term 'laywer guitar' or 'dentist blues' is a somewhat unfair stereotype. I think HTH explains what is meant by that very well though ;) and I'm sure you know what is meant too.. From the BKP meetups, I wouldn't put either you or Dave in that bracket.

I'm a very moderately-heeled professional (I suppose), certainly not a weekend warrior  .  And I can barely play a note.  I buy PRS guitars, I buy Gibsons.... I buy Epiphones, I buy Grecos.  I just like guitars.

The thing is, isn't the important aspect of all this that those guys are just doing something they enjoy?  They wouldn't be any more or less "worthy" if they had Squier Strats and ropey old Carlsbros or Peavey Bandits.  They have good gear because it just so happens they can afford it, they're not necessarily trying to show off and say "look what I've got".

It's the inverse snobbery thing again - if our hypothetical pub band were two plumbers and a postman with cheap gear, they might still be totally unable to play a 12-bar blues but they'd never attract the kind of contempt our PRS-toting lawyers do.  In fact, they'd almost certainly be regarded as a good bunch of lads.  But really, what's the difference?

I'm not sure I even believe in "earning your stripes" or "being worthy of the instrument", but if I did I don't think they have anything to do with what gear you choose/can afford to buy.

(Not arguing with you, Ian.... just ruminating on the points you made!  :) )
