Advice on amp purchase!!!
« on: October 03, 2012, 03:18:29 AM »
I have been in the market for a new amp for a good time now and have recently found a few deals on amps and would like opinions on which one i should go for.
I play a older model Ibanez RGA321 with the stock dimarzio/ibz pickups (for now, but the amp is the priority at this time) and play everything from metal(gojira-bloodbath) to more classic rock/prog (yes, pink floyd, led zeppelin, deep purple)

I have found good deals and am torn between the Carvin V3M, Line 6 vetta II HD, and a Krank Krankenstein (100 watt) each of these for right around $600 US.

Any advice or experience with these amps you can share would be greatly appreciated. Right now i am leaning toward the Carvin because the versatility.
All I want to be is normally insane.

Check out an EVH 5150III 50 watt.  I was put onto it via these forums and glad I did.  Saving to get one now  :)

The Carvin is a nice amp and not very expensive. If you like Orange have a look at the Thunder 30 and 100. Nice cleans and tons of gain on tap. In the lunchbox-department you could also check out the Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 36.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

This. The Carvin V3M is an excellent amp and I adore my Orange TH30. Slightly different beasts, though. The Carvin is more modern sounding and far more tweakable tone-wise... But i wouldn't consider more versatile. It's great for very clean and very dirty... not much else.
The orange is great. It's pretty much a modern/americanised take on british high gain amps. Lots and lots of gain on tap and very nicely voiced. The cleans are pretty although they aren't as "fender perfect" as the carvin's cleans but I prefer the distortion. The carvin is just too "american" for my tastes. It's distortion just sounds a bit messier... The closest comparison i can think of is a mesa/boogie rectifier.
The orange, despite it's lack of controls, also covers a wider range of music in my opinion. It just sounds better for the middle ground from blues to 80's heavy metal. For 90s metal they both do very well and i find that the carvin is better for the really modern metal and really clean tones.

The EHV 5150III is great too.

Carvin should work great for this.

I am interested in the EVH 5150 III mini and orange th30, but both are slightly out of my price range if i include price for a cab. I have also heard bad things about the volume jump on the EVH between the clean and crunch volume.

Another contender is the 6505 112, i know it is made in china but it is well within my price point.

Smile at mom or grandmom...  :) and get the TH30.

I was also looking at a 6505+ 112.  It's in my price range.  But when I saw the 5150III and heard it and what it could do I thought that's the way to go.  Not having a cab is also my problem but I'm prepared to save for a while longer to have 212 cab for it.  Made in China isn't a bad thing now days.  I have an Epiphone Les Paul tribute out of China and its brilliant and cheap too.

The volume jump is a concern but it won't deter me.  I was going to put the 6505+ 112 through a 412 at some point.  5150III with 212 works out to be the same cost here in Australia.
