celestion gold
« on: October 09, 2012, 09:04:14 PM »
Scored one of these in Twinfan's autumn clearout & actually tried it out in my engl screamer combo today. It's a very nice speaker. Without getting wordy i find it sparkly, rounded (as in not harsh) & generally refined.
This is at med vol. and i'm not in a hurry to push it too much 'til i procure another.
For bedroom bashers like myself this is a very musical bit of kit, imo perfect in a medium sized combo.
Having restrung my IT'd strat which has been unloved recently i once again remembered why this will always be my favourite guitar.

They work very well paired up with a G12H Heritage.

Especially in two pairs in a 4x12 X-pattern  ;)

Glad you're enjoying it gordiji, they're a great speaker!

never got round to trying any alnico speakers yet... could never really get past the price (also suspect ceramic might be better for what i want). Of course, i've spent enough on ceramic that i could have bought an alnico...

Nice score, speakers are awesome fun :D

I have a pair of the 10" Golds in a 4x10 along with some G10 Vintage's, huge sounding cab.

The Alnico Gold is a very nice sounding speaker. I just would not take the 50W rating seriously. I tried a JTM-45 through a 1x12" cab with that speaker and had the impression that it could not handle the power and the bass from the amp. On the other hand, it works extremely well with both of my homebuilt amps with a pair of cathode biased EL34s. They put out about 30-35W clean.

Cheers Stephan

like you Stephen, i'll not take the 50w rating too seriously. I seem to remember a 2x12 blown in a youtube clip were they were marshalled to death.

I have 2 Golds and 2 Heritage G12Hs in my 4x12 which has been regularly gigged with a cranked JTM45/100 head.

The speakers can take it  ;)

that's only 25W going to each speaker, though, surely? (assuming the amp's actually putting out 100W, which it probably isn't and is likely putting out a lot more  Twice as much as rated, though? I dunno. )

I also had two Golds in a 2x12 being used with my Bogner XTC and the JTM45/100, again no issues whatsoever.

They're 50w rated speakers from Celestion guys - don't be scared!

yeah celestions have the rep of being pretty conservatively-rated.

whether i'd chance it with £150+ speakers is another thing, though

yeah that's true  I have several ceramic celestions which are more or less bang on the money for the wattage my amps are (though i never really crank them, either). Not sure i'd chance that with what i've heard of some other brands' rating methods...
