Another one to consider might be the Diamond Memory Lane. Not cheap, but not terribly expensive either and a nice combination of old (analogue circuit, simulated tape warble) and new (550ms delay time, tap tempo (!), stereo, true bypass). I saw some Diamond products last year and was impressed by their build and component quality.

Yeah, that Memory Lane sure is a beautiful pedal. I just think it's a little on the pricey side, personally.

I've got the Deluxe Memory Man. I bought it from Analogman who modified it to be true-bypass but now they come as true-bypass by standard.

Re. Willo: Granted the Memory Lane is not cheap but for a bit more money than say a Line6 delay modeler you get something better sounding with tap tempo and switchable modulation offering modern versatility. Building an analogue 550ms echo isn't that easy, leave alone designing a seperate digital circuit for the tap-tempo to control the echo times of a fully analogue echo unit. This combined with highgrade components makes for a higher price which I however don't think is unreasonable. I am glad there are companies making the effort to design, construct and market these more specialist and expensive units.

On topic... the Delay Modeler from Line6 is actually a pretty good echo unit too! I use one for slapback and ambient echo (both with the multihead model) and reverse with 100% mix so I sound completely backwards :D. However, as you might have guessed, it will be replaced shortly by a Memory Lane.

Tin(it)us, have you had a chance to play the Memory Lane? Only I see that it's stocked in a few shops on the Continent, but not here in the UK (where I live). So my big concern - and I mean for me, personally - is shelling out £270 on an FX unit without being able to try it out beforehand. I did a similar thing with the EHX 16 Second Delay, and whilst I thought it was a good unit, it didn't quite suit me. I'm worried that the same thing might happen with the Memory Lane. If you've been able to play with it already, how did you find it?

I was able to test one two months ago while on holiday in Germany, although not very thorougly (about 10mins). My impression was that it didn't alter the main tone like my line6 does a bit and the echos were very natural in the mix, warm but not dull. The modulation is like a vibrato and is close to what a tape-echo does (I owned a Roland RE501 for a few years so I know how that sounds). It selfoscillates pretty easy which is cool if you like to fiddle with that.

Overall I was impressed by the sounds I was getting both with short and longer echo times so I'm saving up for the upgrade. The Diamond range is now actually imported over here in the Netherlands so I should be able to test it some more before I take the plunge. I agree that blindly ordering one at this price is risky. I certainly wouldn't do it without testing one.

I've also been on a delay hunt recently and have tried most mentioned here. As a result I have narrowed the search down to a grand total of one... the T-Rex Replica.

It covers both modern and vintage territory and is super quiet, studio quality kit. Although it comes at a price...

That will give you a start. Also dont discount cheap stuff. DD3 DD6 boss gear is sturdy reliable and gets the job done.

Sounds like you're after analog delay rather than digital? That will dictate your choice of effect.

I have an EHX Deluxe Memory Man and it's a great pedal - loads of variety, plus it does analog chorus too. Sounds like you need to get into a good guitar shop and back-to-back a bunch of pedals :D

i would go with the TC electronics Vintage delay. Its such a sweet sounding, natural delay, with a filter switch to make the true tape echo sound as it deteriorates. They are expensive though, but tap temp, triplet switch, effect level, knob for delay rate (as well as tap) and output. The lights are hella bright, strobe light too. Excellent pedla, the -rex delay is the same but a little cheaper, i just liked the TC's lights.

Problem is that i live in Exeter, and the local shops here only have

1.Delayla
1.Delayla XL
1 Boss DD3
1 Boss DD5

and NOTHING else... sucks huh?

I think you should blag a trip somewhere with a decent range to try out. Could be an excuse for a trip to Denmark Street????
