I start with 3 mm with the string pressed on the 12th note. Then I adjust down to find the sweet spot. The RY is quite bright, but on top of that BKP's have enormous clarity you have to get used to. Especially the RY is sensitive for the right height. There are enough RY-owners here to give you some advice. I guess you have to adjust the amp-eq a bit too.

I've never messed around with pickup height to the degree that I did with my RYs. Part of it was fascination with the very different tones that can be had at different heights. I would suggest approaching from both directions i.e. set the pickups high and get used to how they sound while experimenting with your amp settings. Then set them as low as they will go and do the same thing. This will give you an idea of the extremes and then you can work towards your preferred height.

Do it one pickup at a time. Personally I'd start with the bridge because I spend most of my time using the bridge pickup.  I was initially taken aback by the brightness of the RYs but when you are able to appreciate what it does for your live sound it makes a lot of sense. The RYs seem happiest to me with a lot of power amp volume and medium gain levels. Lil' Devil has never sounded so good.

Well got my ry in the les Paul only had a quick play with the band sond good very bright treble on bridge pickup but that could also be the matchless as it can sound very piecing sometimes. It is going to take time to get my rig set need time to play with tone controls on drive pedals. But the ry do sound good just a bit of tweaking needed. I will post photo of guitar and rig when get a bit more time.

A pickup this awesome will require you to change the settings for your previous, obsolete pickups of course!

If that doesn't do the trick, others pots an capacitors can tame the RY a bit.
