Another Dream Guitar
« on: October 23, 2012, 01:37:37 AM »
Well folks, since there have been two very impressive new dream PRS threads, i thought i'd add my baby :)

i actually got this a little while ago, and some other bits and pieces too, including a couple of Juan Solo pedals.  i'll detail them in another thread.  this is about my dream guitar!

i've long wanted a guitar from the year of my birth, and the ideal was a Gibson Les Paul.  unfortunately, they weren't officially making Standards then, only Deluxes and Customs.  so, a few years ago i managed to get a Deluxe.  unfortunately, a moronic "luthier" destroyed the fretboard on it.  cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

then, a couple of months ago, a guy i know who sells guitars appeared with a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Standard.  not a converted Deluxe, an original, factory made with full size humbuckers.  and more than that, in beautiful condition!  records from the time are not clear, but i know Gibson didn't officially make standards until 1977.  but from '72 to '76, you could special order them, basically a Deluxe with PAFS.  in '75, only one was made in Kalamazoo!  this is not it :)  it would have a mahogany neck, this is maple.  there are no definite records of how many were made in Nashville.  my guy reckons only 18!  but others have said there could have been a few hundred.  i don't really know, but it's the first I've seen.

so it's the guitar i've been after for a decade, and i've got it, and as a bonus it's a bloody great guitar!  and here it is...

Ah yes the LP dream, I know it myself. I gotta get a propper one too one day (that LP-ish one I have does not count really).

A old school LP, made in the music city? Nice mate. Very nice.
Generally that is how a LP should look like, it could go into the books as a textbook example.

How are the PUs?
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Thanks :)

the pickups are great, vintage sounding.  bright yet full bodied, crunchy in all the right places, and clean up beautifully.  70's Gibsons don't have the best of reputations, but this is a really nice guitar.  i'm very happy with it

Nice catch, I didn't know all that history about limited production of LP Standards in the '70s (or at least, I'd forgotten all about it!)

I did once buy a guitar from my birth year, but I never really liked it much, got rid of it in the end.  Glad yours worked out better!  :D
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Very nice indeed-though you make me feel older when you talk of guitars being made in my formative years.

That's great, the story behind it and the guitar! That's one of the nicest and classier burst colours from any era... love it. Congrats on finding your one. Hope you're still grinning like I am.  :D

That's cool, I always imagine '70s Gibsons as having thin necks.  :)

Great looking guitar. I don't really like the look of PRS guitars (not saying they're not great guitars) but Gibsons to me are so much more beautiful. I also prefer redheads to blondes.
