Another BKP newbie - need advice on which p/u
« on: October 24, 2012, 09:53:08 PM »
Hello all -
I have heard great things about BKP and well now its time for me to choose one. I have an Ibanez Artist ARX307 http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-ARZ307FM
(basically a 7 string LP shape body) mahogany body/flame maple top. It has passive EMGs that just seem a little weak. Im playing thru a Egnater Armageddon. My 6 string guitars typically have Invaders or factory Dean p/u's (DiMarizo Super II's) in the bridge position and sound amazing thru this amp. This guitar sounds ok at best..... just doesn't seem to have as much gain. My/our style/sound would be somewhat comparable  to Sevendust/Dark New Day, KIll Switch, etc - of course we're using a drop tuning. What would be my best options? I've read the specs and listened to the samples, but peoples feedback is always best. So?

Welcome to the forum!

Ok, some more words on what you want out of the tone always help, but for KSE type sounds you should really get along with either the Miracle Man or the Blackhawk. Both are somewhat in the region of EMG tones, but with all the extra BKP goodness.

The MM will be very big and chuncky, with earthshattering palmmutes. Tight, clear, big and pure modern metal (though one would be suprised at the 80s tones in that thing). It looks scooped on the tone chart (which is only for the bridge model), but the thing is that while it does not have a ton of high and center mids (very much enough though) it has tons of low mids.
Biggest downside is probably that the cleans are rather hi-fi clean, but add some distortion and really crank that amp and boom.

The Blackhawk I can not comment on much, but it was designed as the passive answer to active PUs. Giving all the good things about actives while remaining deep, touch sensitive and organic like good passives.
Heard a lot of good things about these (there have been some reviews and comments around here). Said to be very, very versatile and they can definetly give you the sounds you want.

Take a look at the Cold Sweats as well. I think they can get pretty close to KSE.

I've had Cold Sweat and still have Miracle Man...Both played in mahogany guitar but man you can't beat MM for modern stuff...Cold Sweat sounds more organic and to me has feel of alnico mag...Great for 80's-90's hard'n'heavy and early thrash metal stuff...It's more scooped than MM which will excel for stuff like KSE,In Flames etc...Both sound great...

have CWP,MM...had AM,CS,VHII,NB,PK,HD...

cold sweat sounds very ceramic to me
just not harsh or oversaturated like most of other brand ceramics
but, it's more of a pantera's vulgar display of power focused tone than KsE
definitely a miracle man job
a properly boosted holy diver will work pretty well too

So thanks for the feedback so far - I've been reading a lot of good things about the MMs and I thinks that's how I'm going to go.... But now covers? Y/N? - I've never owned a humbucker with covers - I've watched the YouTube vids from BKP showing the differences, but hearing people's options is always better - any thoughts?

With covers itīs a simple thing to me. There is a sound difference (the winding is adjusted to minimise the difference), but it is there, but: You have watched the comparison videos and if you did not say "X definetly sounds better than Y to me" just get what you prefer look wise.
