Need pickup selection help for 7 string
« on: December 05, 2012, 11:07:34 PM »
Hi everyone, I'm new here but I've got the BKP bug.
So I'm looking for a set of pickups, and I'm pretty sure I've settled on the A-Bomb for the bridge; I'm looking for a Modern voiced pickup with a vintage twist.  I want that satisfying upper midrange bite and a natural sounding low end, yet something that can still do a hot blues as well.  I'm pretty sure that this is my guy for the bridge.

I'm not sure about the neck.  I'm going to be playing mostly metal and blues, but I also playing jazz guitar where I'm doing the walking bass line and chords on top.  This is the only 7 string I'm going to get so I really want versatile neck pickup.  I like warm and thick neck humbuckers but I'm worried that the Nailbomb might be a bit too over the top.  Should I be concerned?

If I need to to go with another pickup, I'd want something warm, thick, articulate and something that would match well with the a-bomb bridge, and yet still be able to do clean jazz tones.  Any insight you guys have would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi and welcome.

Let us know which timbers your guitar is made of. Otherwise it is difficult to recommend a BKP.

Mahogany body Ibanez ARZ 307.  It's their version of a 7 string paul - definitely not the best piece of Mahogany I've heard in my life unfortunately.

The A-Bomb will stretch from blues to metal (use the vol.knob) but you could also have a look at the Rebel Yell: less bass, prominent mids and uppermids, quite bright but  could balance perfect in a sevenstring mahogany guitar.
For the neck there are different options: the open and vocal Mule would cover the jazz and blues-idiom quite well. Another option is the humbucker-sized P90 Missisippi Queen which has quite some fans on the forum.

I would think blues would be a stretch for the ABomb, more towards the RY region.

According to Tim the NB should do blues too. Of course you need the tweak the amp and work with the guitars volumeknob.

I had an abomb in my LP clone and though it is a very aggressive pickup it could still do blues with the volume rolled back with a modern voicing though. So I think the abomb will suit you fine. For the neck I think you should listen to Telerocker's suggestions and have a look at the MQ and the Mule.
