single coil series option
« on: December 30, 2012, 01:26:34 PM »
Hello good people here!

I'm currently contemplating giving my strat (S S S) a series switch option. What I want is basically a mini toggle that once flipped will just give me bridge and mid in series, bypassing the tone controls, 5 way switch, and just keeping the volume engaged. I'm not really good with understanding schematics, I just know how to solder things quite well. I think that in order to do this you'd need a fair amount of poles on the mini toggle...just wondering if anyone experienced with this kind of stuff would give me a heads up as to whether this is a lost cause or not?
Also, it's important that this would be hum cancelling. The set has a rw/rp middle pickup.

Thanks!

oh you can totally do this with a 4pdt switch I believe, might try it.

the reason for bypassing tone controls is that bridge and mid in series sometimes sounds too dark, so detaching tone controls would result in more treble. also would never use the tone control anyway...

Check out www.guitarnuts.com - there are several wiring options including series wiring for single coils, notably the Strat Lover's Strat and the S-Tastic.

Hi dasmanj,

I've tried this wiring on my strat (bridge and middle in series with hum cancelling but with tone, volume and selector in the circuit). My strat is loaded with a set of texas specials and to my ears this wiring was not really good. It was not as 'meatty' as I expected, didn't really sound like a humbucker.... bref.... I was not going to use it as often as I thought.

I changed it to get the bridge p/up directly to the jack and that bring a difference, a real one. There I got an extra grit and a huge amount of dynamic (even if there is no volume control I get clean sound with a light pick and a good crunch if I pick hard).

As said, that is simply my taste....

Happy new year to everyone!
