BKP for Charvel Jackson Soloist
« on: January 02, 2013, 07:08:30 AM »
Hi Guys,

Happy New Year! I came for some advice, I know most of the people here have better experience with BKP's.
Here is my dilemma. I just got a 90's CHARVEL JACKSON Soloist (from early Charvel production line) I believe it has an Alder body, Rosewood fingerboard & maybe a maple neck, H-H pickup config. It plays awesome even for an old guitar. It has Floyd rose bridge as well. Although the pickups are fine, I need something better.

My style of playing is more on modern metal, Standard C# & Drop B tuning. Any recommendations for a BKP pickups set?
Here is some sample recorded with a LP Standard & Nail Bomb set: https://soundcloud.com/pariahmusicsg

-For the bridge I want something clear, powerful & tight but not too bassy or trebly. If it comes with a decent clean tone, that will be a bonus also.

-For the neck, I need something that can produce fluid solos as I usually play leads (sometimes sweepings) on the neck pup.

Sorry for the long post guys. Hope you can help me. Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Will a HOLYDIVER set work well with Drop tuning? There is one set on cheap sale in our local forum here in my country.

Hey, I also tune to c# and I can tell you the holy diver can go much lower if needed, its not like an aftermath or emg but its a very versatile pickup that can do pretty much anything (which is why I bought it, I play everything from prog rock to brutal death metal) if your mainly playing modern metal (not really sure what that means exactly) then id probably go for a aftermath/cold sweat set, probably the most recommended set for metal, and for a good reason.

Interesting. The lowest tuning we go is drop B. Have you tried it with drop B?
Is it tight enough for fast chugging & muting?

To give you an idea, here is a song we did. Its on drop B LP with a Nailbomb set.

Thanks Bro!

I use every tuning from D standard to A standard on a 25" scale PRS, maybe you can tell me you amp/gear setup? I run a digitech GSP1101 with various sounds and will probably never have a problem like tightness in low tunings. I never liked ceramic pickups because they sound thin and bad for lead in comparison to alnico pickups, so the way I dial in my tone is a lot different then if I used ceramic pickups.

Well I didn't notice that clip lol, the holy diver is a little warmer on the top end, with more mids and little less bottom end then the nailbomb in my experience, it's a little less aggressive and better for bridge lead sounds.

For live gigs, unfortunately I dont have an amp. I bring pedals. Usually I just use a Tubescreamer in front if the amp has a nice gain channel. I dont usually crank up the gain to the point of muddiness. I want a tight, clear chugging/riffing tone. Amps on venues are usually Marshalls.

But for recording, like that clip I posted, thats Lepou plugin/amps & some Catharsis cab presets if I remember correctly. I dont have much problem with tight amps when we are recording. :D I think thats an ENGL Invader amp simulator.

Neck through Soloists work really well with Miracle man pickups in my experience.
Bass is kept tight and precise and treble isn't too piercing

Miracle man would be far to bright for this guitar imo, id go for a nailbomb, if you think your holy diver is tight enough than the nailbomb will be too.

@PartyAnimal223, how is the Neck version of HD for leads? Whats the wood on your PRS?

The HD set is still avail, Im talking to the seller but have not decided yet. hehe..

I saw a clip on Youtube comparing a HD & Aftermath in 2 indentical Caparisons. The HD sounds open & clear, the Aftermath is also great, tight & heavy. \m/ He also stated also he's tuned in C Standard.

For the Miracle Man, wont it be too trebly or bright considering the Top end of the MM?

It has a weird quality in the midrange, the cold sweat is definitely the best choice for leads. If you want tight and heavy then the aftermath would work, but I don't know if its fit for a alder/maple guitar, on paper it seems it would work but most put them in mahogany or basswood guitars...

Personally I beg to differ (although your milage may vary and it's all down to personal taste)
I have fitted many Miracle Man sets to Soloists and other neck thru Jacksons with great effect.

Which guitar did you have the MM in?

Any experience on the Miracle Man being down tuned? (Standard C# & Drop B)
Does it cut through live mix/playing well?

Thanks!

I have to confess that many of the guitars I put them in were tuned to E, Eflat and D and it sounded v good.

I did put it in a guitar where it was down to B and it still sounded good but I didn't get to try it in a full band scenario as it was someone else's guitar
