Just ordered a set of Irish Tours - First impressions up!
« on: January 04, 2013, 05:18:36 PM »
My wife bought me a Fender Classic Player 60s Strat for Christmas. Fine guitar, but those pickups are horribly trebly. Through the JTM1 they're downright ugly.
So I ordered a prewired pickguard with an Irish Tour set. Tim assured me this will beef up the tone.
As I wanted this guitar to scratch my Rory itch, the Irish Tours were a no brainer.
They should be here early next week. Can't wait :)

Congrats! I have the middle- and neck-IT paired with a Crawler, which does some nice split with the middle-IT. They are certainly beefier then Mothers Milk, a bit less woody. They also have more bass and mids, but still a good chimey topend. The neckpickup is amazing. If you turn the guitars vol.knob a tad down you get in MM-territory.
Have fun!
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I have an IT in the bridge of my Strat. I would have bought all three but didn't have the cash at the time. I don't use my Strat much these days but it's a mighty fine sounding pickup. Must get the Strat out for a spin.

I'll wire up the guitar tomorrow or wednesday. I'm too tired now, I'll mess up :(

Couldn't resist, I installed the Irish Tour PG yesterday. Didn't mess up, although initially for some reason I got no sound at all. Bit of jiggling with the wires and everything worked.

By the time I'd finished, it was a quarter to ten, so couldn't put too much playing time in.
First impression : the JTM doesn't like these any better than it did the stock pickups :? I'm starting to think there may be something wrong with the amp...

But, on to the pickups.
Compared to the stocks they have loads more output and plenty of balls. Rather noisy though.
Into the JCM unboosted they deliver a pleasant thump. Boosted with a Little Big Muff, it was juicy, greasy and huge. But very noisy. Going to put some more play time in this evening. I'll throw a noise gate in front to see how that works out. I had the TV on yesterday as well, that does generate quite some noise for certain pickups.

My first impression, however, is very positive in general. The neck pickup is very rounded, but I love the bite of the bridge. I'll need to play a lot more and compare to my American Standard, but this may well be the best sounding bridge single coil I've played yet. The neck pickup, in comparison, seems a bit polite. The three middle positions act as one would expect.

Sounds good so far...but the noise has me off. Depending on how strong it is maybe you should double check your wiring again, mostly the ground. Could be a cold on somewhere. Cause while my IT is rather noisy too at times you make it sound like it is more than normal, though that is really hard to tell.

Do you have noise in all positions on the pickup selector? You definitely should have less in positions #2 and #4. If not, a wiring error seems likely.

Single coils with higher output also have a bit more hum - that's the nature of the beast to some extent.

Cheers Stephan

Not sure about the noise issue, but the JTM is a picky amp pedal-wise, not surprised it's picky with pickups too.

I don't find my Irish Tours very noisy, nor my Mother's Milk. Using Orange Rockerverb 50 head/cab.

The noise was caused by the TV in the room, like I suspected. The IT's aren't any more noisy than I'd expect from a true single coil  :)
Strat + Little Big Muff + JCM1 = totally righteous :D

I have one small point of criticism : I got the set in a prewired pickguard. The wiring and soldering work is just about perfect (as I'd expected) but I would like it if Tim used slightly longer bits of tubing to mount the pickups. I feel I can't lower the middle pickup quite enough.

Not sure about the noise issue, but the JTM is a picky amp pedal-wise, not surprised it's picky with pickups too.
Yep. The JTM kind of likes the OD9 but that's it. I'm still looking into which other overdrive to get.
It sounds awesome with a Les Paul with Seth Lovers and one with Gibson's stock 498/490 set, but that's about it. Definitely a one trick pony.

I didn't go for a RW/RP middle pickup. So positions 2 and 4 aren't hum canceling.
