MXR Distortion Plus / DOD 250
« on: January 05, 2013, 08:10:07 PM »
Thoughts on this pedal any one if you wouldnt mind.  I must admit i'm pedal crazy but I can only think of 4 pedals I genuinely need, 1 being a chorus pedal which may b better than the one I have and the other 3 being overdrives/distortions which may be better than what I have.

I already have a Wampler Pinnacle which I love but of course im always looking for other things which may be better or a cool alternative.

Maxon/Ibanez TS9.
DOD 250 (Why can you never find these anywhere?! If you know let me know please!)
MXR Distortion +

Question is has any ever used the distortion plus and what are there thoughts on it?  Theyre very budget friendly but still I dont want to waste money unnecessarily.   Ive also heard its very similar if not identical to the dod 250

Id use all of the above just to add colour and gain to my lead tone not really as a boost as its seemingly impossible to boost my orange rockerverb through the front of my amp.  Overdrives or 'boosts' just change the tone or saturate more.....  (I use an Xotic EP Booster in the fx loop for a volume booster).

I had an MXR Distortion + which just sounded harsh through my amp (a fairly tweedy Fenderish style design) so I got rid of it. Many others seem to rave about them though so your mileage may vary. I do find OD and distortions to be very a) personal and b) dependent on your guitar/amp combination. Dull as it may be, I haven't heard an OD in my set up that I like as much as my bog standard TS 808.

Youre right, you cant cant far wrong with a tubescreamer but I think the MXR Distortion is cheaper and might be what im looking for mixed with my amps give already overdriven tone to give that more push and saturation.

Id never use any pedal for my base overdrive tone unless it was some sort of gigging emergency (e.g my amp breaking) so itd be just to make soloing easier/sound better.

I just got a MXR custom badass modified OD yesterday and it's by far the best OD i've played to date. It's so incredibly versatile and pretty transparent unless you engage the bump switch that boosts the midrange and lows  a bit (and can also be used with the pedal bypassed to thicken things up.

It was also very refreshing being able to just plug and play rather than build it like all the past OD circuits i've tried.

I was looking at that too.  MXR are really good value for money to be fair.  What attracted me to the distortion plus is how cheap you can pick them up though new or second hand!

Well it's a classic circuit (and one i havent tried to date, I should get on that!) so i'd say give it a shot with them being so cheap and see how it reacts with your gear.

I think I should take the plunge youre right and I dont have to feel guilty like I would buying a tubescreamer or any thing more expensive.  Dont get me wrong I know a tubescreamer in itself aint ridiculous but it is if its just gonna sit in my cupboard and be put straight back on ebay!  The Custom badass sounds very natural and very good so does my wampler pinnacle.  I think when you play metal like I do sometimes you need something less subtle to stand out!

I agree entirely. That's one of the main reasons i went for the custom badass because i read a lot about how its just a 'more' pedal rather than screwing with the frequencies.

A friend of mine has the Marshall YJM amp, which has a built in DOD pedal, basically. Sounds pretty good to me!

+1 to all that!

I have all three of the pedals mentioned and they all have there uses. The 250/dist+ sounds very different to a TS type.

I like the 250 alot for strat-type single coils. Both the MXR and the 250 have a little bit of a fuzzy quality. My TS I only really use for the occasional solo, it's not usually my thing. I would say the 250 is my favourite, but I have modded mine.. Previous to the mods I probably preferred the MXR, but I rarely use it now and should probably sell it.
