NPD: MXR Custom badass modified overdrive.

Hey guys I got this pedal the other day and it's the most fun I've had with a pedal for a long time!

I also got a set of JH EMGs which are really nice but we wont discuss that here.

I posted a quick breakdown on my blog until i'm more familiar with the pedal then i'll be recording clips etc and going into a bit more depth.

Congrats! I always liked that pedal, and I was choosing between the CBMOD or the Way Huge Green Rhino. The Rhino won by a hair, but you got yourself a cool pedal! I also wanna hear a little more about the Het Set.

I'll be posting a review and clips on the blog in a few days of the het set i don't really wish to discuss them on here being the bkp forum and all however heres a pic! The first thing i noticed about them was that they have quite a good helping of mids!

I was really surprised too. I played them a while back in PMT and don't remember them being so middy. However it was a very pleasant surprise.

I'm looking to get a non-TS style overdrive to go with my JTM and soon to arrive Irish Tours.
As I'm a bit of an MXR fan, I've had this one in my sights for a while.
I might pull the trigger on one.

^ i think the badass is based on a ts (or maybe more like an sd1, but similar, anyway).

Now- that doesn't matter if it sounds different enough (I haven't tried it), and also I dare say you could design a completely different OD circuit which sounded pretty similar to a TS (big mid hump), so how it sounds compared to what you want it for is more important than the circuit design and origin. But I just thought it was worth pointing out when you said you wanted a "non-TS style overdrive".

When I say "non-TS style" I mean sonically, because that's all that matters to me.
How they go about achieving the tone, I really couldn't care less
So yeah, what I meant was no mid hump, basically. I'm looking for something with a fairly flat frequency response.
From Toe-Knee's description, it looks like this one might fit the bill, at least with the "hump" disengaged.

I think basically all MXR overdrive products are variants of the TS in one way or another, so it probably wouldn't be your best bet. However, the CBMOD is one of the least akin to the TS, and it has enough tone shaping knobs on it that you could find a tone you want out of it that suits you.

the best advice i can give you really is to go out and try one. I can't see it being a problem as most places seem to stock MXR pedals. Just see if it works for you.

An in-store test can only tell me so much too. I need to use stuff with my own rig. Been burned plenty of times by something that sounded awesome in the shop and sounded like total cr@p at home or with the band :?

I'll probably just pull the trigger and order it from Thomann. From what I've seen in demos, it sounds different enough from my OD9. If it really doesn't add anything, I'll send it back.

Toe Knee, did you get more playtime in? Any new thoughts about it?

Nope unfortunately i haven't had a chance to play tonight as i've been running around to the doctors and trying to get my surgery booked in. I should get a good few hours in tomorrow
