Blackhawk-why should i get one?
« on: January 08, 2013, 04:28:22 PM »
So have been thinking of getting another PRS SE  and was thinking of chucking some actives in it so as to have a wide range of tones available in my arsenal. But being a BKP whore as i am, i have obviously been attracted to the Blackhawk pups. The samples i have heard online havent really blown me away but I know that clips are one thing and having it in person is another. What i want to know by people who have tried this pup is- how different is it to other pups? is it really like a passive 'active'? I have heard so many different descriptions regarding its output-some people saying it sounds massive and is louder than say the Dimarzio Crunchlab and the Nailbomb-other people saying its on par with the Abraxas pup or slightly lower. I only ask as i am also tempted by the EMG Hetset which is supposed to be superb and i know will have a good amount of power behind them. The BH also on paper seems to have a good amount of mids and treble, meaning it should in theory cut through the mix really well-is this the case?Cheers people!

It does have a lot of output, just slightly less than a Seymour Duncan JB in my guitar. (A thick mahogany Schecter. A diamond in the ruff considering it's tone.) To my ears the bass is actually the fullest range. Treble is very detailed and Hi-Fi I guess. The low mids are really full and crushing and the high mids are a lot like the JB to my ears actually. Less scratchy and thicker though. It's a very thick pickup but I'm sure it would cut through a mix because the top end is very strong as well. It's anti-mud.

Cheers for that- glad to hear its not shy in the output stakes; have you got any other BKPs you can compare it to outputwise? surprised to hear that the bass frequency seems to be the most prevalent but i guess it also depends on what guitar it goes into, i like the fact its thick sounding though

If its a little less than a JB, which in comparison to my holy divers is hot as $%&#, I would say its pretty hot haha.
