Wilko Johnson ill
« on: January 09, 2013, 11:03:58 PM »
I have seen a facebook post that says Wilko Johnson has been diagnosed with cancer and the outloook is grim. Very sad- I used to see Dr Feelgood many times at the Kursaal years ago.

The report on it that I saw said he's been diagnosed with terminal Pancreatic Cancer and he's chosen to not have Chemotherapy or treatment for it  :(

Terrible shame. Would be no punk as we know it without the Feelgoods.

Yes, sad news indeed.

He is a unique stylist , and master of the minimal ( made to sound maximal ).  From his 'clockwork mouse' antics on stage in the 70s, to carrying the real R&B torch into the present time , he has remained a great character - and true Gentleman. Whichever way this one goes,  I salute him on many levels - and thank him for the inspiration.

He did it right ... 8)

Very sad news. I didn't see this post the other day when I posted about it.
I never got to see him live. I saw adverts for his gigs in Time Out (Mag') all the time years ago but never did make it to one. I knew I'd regret not seeing him one day.
I can remember buying Milk & Alcohol in Woolies years ago. Great riff and solo :-)
What he has got is one of the worst ways to go. It's untreatable. Poor Wilco. :-(

Hi Johnny, yeah I saw your post too. I was lucky to see Dr Feelgood a lot of times as we used to nip down to Southend a fair bit to see them.I remember watching him dart around the stage with a manic look- he looked scary then and I was quite young and it kinda stayed with me. I heard him interviewed on the Paul Jones show last year and he sounded charming and intelligent.
he is a brave soul though I suspect his decision might be influenced by his wife dying of cancer -I don't know and I am only speculating. I just hope that he doesn't suffer too much.

This is such sad news. I was raised on Wilko and his playing has always been a huge inspiration. Definitely one of the few players who you know who is playing after three notes. I've always felt he was very underrated and his playing added so much to Dr Feelgood and The Blockheads, two of my favourite bands. I hope he manages to do things the way he wants to over the coming months.

Anyone see Wilko on BBC Breakfast (or hear him on this radio) this morning?

It was quite remarkable.  He said he's still feeling well at present, he took the news completely calmly and is in almost an euphoric state - there is no future, you can't change the past so he's living completely in the present.  All the time he was talking he had a little smile on his face.

I always liked him, although I can't pretend to have been a big fan, but now I have to say he is quite possibly the coolest man in the world.

I've enjoyed his playing for years and seen him many times so I feel a great deal of affection for him and the memories that it brings. I am impressed by his stoicism and when you hear him, it is clear that he knows the way things are likely to go. This is one of those times when a miracle would be nice.

Yes, I saw him with Dr Feelgood a couple of times - great simple high energy music.

Steve, if you haven't seen this already I would recommend this DVD http://www.oilcityconfidential.co.uk/. An excellent documentary on Dr Feelgood mostly narrated by Wilko.
