Hello, as you can see I'm new here. I have a 2001 Gibson SG Gothic (mahogany body/neck w/ Ebony fretboard) and I have already "upgraded" the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan SH-6. (Distortion) The Duncan is starting to irritate me with the upper mid spike and harsh cleans. I was wondering if anyone here has tried a Nailbomb (Alnico) in their SG? I like fat mids, tight bass, and smooth highs.... I play in a Hardcore/Thrashmetal band.

Also, would the 490r be a decent match for the Alnico Nailbomb? I plan on keeping the 490 in the neck.

I realise this thread is a little old and you may have made a decision by now but I would just add that when I asked about this kind of music and an SG on the BKP facebook page recently I was told that a Nailbomb - and specifically an alnico version - would be a good match.  Listening to clips of the Aftermath I think that if that was recommended it would have been for metalcore or something like that, whereas your music has more of a late '80s early '90s feel to it that might perhaps sound funny with the voicing and tightness of the Aftermath.

He also thought the Cold Sweat or else a matched set (Nailbomb/Nailbomb) would work.

This was my original query on FB:

Any suggestions on pickups for a 2011 SG Standard? Style ranges from Ramones to Thin Lizzy to Celtic Frost, Slayer, or even Black Flag. I've read good things about the Cold Sweat neck pickup, and I am wondering about combining it with either Aftermath or Miracle Man in the bridge. I dislike the standard 498T and 490R combo but would like to retain the standard look as much as possible, so I would be thinking chrome covers.

From what you are describing David, I would still have to say the Alnico Nailbomb would be perfect for the tones and styles you are after, The Nailbomb is based on 80s metal tone. Great for what you want it for! As for leg lengh, short fits all, but for Gibson Sg's we recommend long leg due to the angle of the neck. ^ CR

Hope this helps.
