Orange Amps question: TH30 tone vs Dark Terror tone.
« on: February 10, 2013, 07:33:49 AM »
I've had my OR15H just under a month. My initial plan was to run my DT and my OR15H side by side for a while and perhaps get rid of the DT at a later date if I preferred it The OR15. The OR15 was a bit of an impulse buy if I'm honest. Now I've lived with the two for a while I think I prefer the Dark Terror overall. I think I would also prefer a twin channel amp so I dont have to go swapping the leads about all the time when I want to change amps.

How does the tone of the TH30 differ from the Dark Terror? I maybe wrongly have it in my head that the TH30 is going to be a 30w Dark Terror with a bonus clean channel. Would I be wrong?

Thanks for your advice.

The TH30 is great. Very versatile, lots of gain on tap and dynamic.

As far as I can tell its distortion channel it's similar to the DT but slightly brighter, with more high mids and slightly less over-saturated, so a bit more dynamic.
Still, is cr@ploads of gain and it takes overdrive pedals really well if you back down the gain a tiny bit too.

The clean channel is pretty controversial. If you're into fender cleans then its not for you but it's a proper British clean channel that's meant to be cranked. I love it, it's punchy and dynamic and although it breaks up at around 12 o'clock, its bloody loud.
Great for progressive rock or 80s metal. Think Tool or Porcupine Tree.

The drivechannel of the TH30 has more or less the same character and gainreserves as the Rockerverb.

for me the OR15H is a much better amp than the dark terror. It's just a taste thing, I prefer more vintage sounds.

Dark terror has better cleans funnily enough. Or15 has next to no headroom. I like the high gain tones on both equally, so for me the DT wins for its clean ones.

The OR15 is wicked for classic rock. I love the tones, they remind me of my RV on mediumgainsettings. This amp was not build to produce glassy cleans. You need a RV or TH30 for that.

I might just buy a second cab for the OR15, then I can switch between the two easier :D

I returned the OR15 and got myself a TH30. I love it so far. Cripes the clean channel is loud!

My Dark Terror will be going on eBay. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Awesome rig. :)
What guitars are going through it?

Btw, I find that it reacts best at low volumes if you turn it down to 15w using 2 output tubes or even 7w.

I'm wondering how loud you'll be a able to crank it, I get to turn mine up to 9 o'clock on the 7w mode once a week (the drive channel) - the clean channel never goes past 7:30 o'clock. :D

I'm gonna be in much the same boat as you lol. I've not had the chance to crank it while the neighbours are at work yet. Tomorrow.... hehe

I have a Gibson Les Paul (waiting on stormy mondays to arrive), Fender USA strat x2, Ibanez RGA42 with pair o' Warpigs, a Jackson RR24 (EMG81) and the most recent PRS SE Fredrik Akersson (thinking about Riff Raffs for this).

Thats awesome. You've got loads of mids dialled in there, on both channels (on the clean channel when you turn down the bass the mids go up)...

Maybe get a HD :)
I've never tried Stormy Mondays but I've got a feeling that they'll work really nicely with this amp.

Oranges like low- to mediumoutput pickups. I think my Rockerverb sounds best with vintage(hot) singlecoils and humbuckers like Mules. The RV sounds best with the master past 12.00 o'clock, but then I'm blowing the band away. That's why I'm looking for an amp that sounds great on low volume, maybe something with attenuation on board.

Sorry for bringing this thread back up. I'm interested in buying a lower wattage head from orange. How good is the Dark Terror when set clean-ish? How close is it to fender voicing, I suppose because the DT is voiced quite bright (some people say it's fizzy), the clean would have some decent sparkle.
