Which Set for a Bad-Ass Telecaster?
« on: February 13, 2013, 12:15:03 AM »
So i've finally pulled the trigger on all the parts to build my Tele, and it's down to the pickups now, so here's the rundown

Ash Body and Maple neck with maple fretboard, slightly fatter maple neck (59 roundback curve from warmoth)

i'm an eclectic player, equally going between 8 string heavy prog to jazz/rock and my favorite blues player is gary moore, so it's all about balls i guess!

I've been reading so much info about the BKP Tele range i'm getting a bit confused, so here's where i am right now.

* I like Mids, throaty snarly mids, not the honky type

* I'm aiming for a clean but driven sound where you hear that definite twang, and i'm no stranger to using boost pedals for more gain out of a vintage pickup (my fav bucker is the black dog which i use in my 7's and 8's)

* i've always wanted a Tele like that so i don't want to stray much into stratty like territory for the neck pickup

* I'm hovering between the BGF50 or BGF52. also the Brown Sugars as well and maybe The Boss. the PileDriver may be a little too hot..

* I always use 11-49 in standard tuning so i like to coax the tones out of the guitar.

ultimately, i'm looking for a versatile set that will sound very Telecaster-like but that's hard enough for shred?

Also, what about that 4-way toggle switch, i'm almost considering it but one of my favorite tele tones is the clean/driven middle position with RW/RP so it's hum cancelling, i read that the series tone might be a bit too dark with RW/RP...

Help! i'm being swallowed in Tele land!

i guess i'll be fairly happy with a set that can sound like the first few notes of Richie Kotzen's Dust, that's just badass tele tone right there from the neck pickup (he uses a dimarzio twang king neck but i want BKP!)

I think the Flat 50 might blend those two wishes.

So i just finished putting togheter the beast and playing quite alot today.

the blackguard set is perfect, nuff said. the warmoth kit was also pretty easy to put togheter, but i have alot of experience setting guitars up and repairing so it helps.

the blackguard is truly versatile, roars when you boost, but can calm down to a whisper with a hint of a rolled back volume. can't recommend it enough for hot rod tele tone

This comment is also worth another post:

these single coils are the quietest i've ever had the chance to try,you really need to crank the gain way too high to be bothered by the hum, and by the tone is a mushy mess anyway, so there's no point

Sounds like a winner. I have the old BG50 set (now 52) but I'm anxious to try the new hotter BG50.
