Sad. First gig I went to was Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later, a three-piece outfit he had at the time, "10 years after Ten Years After".

Also saw the original Ten Years After a couple of years later at a Reading Festival (I think it was X years anniversary of The Marquee that year).

He did a lot of great stuff and always came across as a really nice bloke in interviews. I saw him a few years back topping the bill over Edgar Winter and Tony McPhee. The night ended with Edgar jamming on sax with Alvin's band. Pure magic.

But - his place in rock history is defined by the Woodstock performance of Goin' Home. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to be there. The ENERGY was just unbelievable. Listened to it yesterday and it never gets old.

Reminds me I must get round to watching the Woodstock Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray at some point!

I never saw him live or heard very much of his music, to be honest, but in my formative years I remember an album called RX5 (with a guitar-playing robot on the cover!) which made an impression on me.

i wasn't really aware of his work until he sadly passed away. i've been listening to some bits since then and he was a really hot player! definite similarities with johnny winter, who i suppose Alvin would have influenced. i like that he modded his gibson ES with a fender single coil.

I doubt Johnny Winter would have actually been influenced by Alvin Lee, but they were certainly contemporaries.

Sad.. It was my first time out from military high school and we went to see Woodstock at a theater in 1971 and they play "I am going home"...That was a powerful thing on a 13 year mind ...Still has that effect.. Great guy..
