I have two HSS-strats:
- Ash Fender American Series HSS with rosewood board - VHII/Mother's Milk
- Swampash MXG Custom strat (handmade by Patrick Eggle) with eboney board - Crawler/Irish Tours.
The Crawler/IT's in general is the better balanced, all purpose set for anything from funk to blues (SRV, Gallagher) to rock and hardrock. The Crawler has still enough PAF-dna to sound vintage and despite the dc-resistance it's not much louder than the VHII in my Fender-strat. The Crawler splits great with the middle IT's. The IT's sound fuller and less bright then the Mother's Milk, but they clean up great for Frusciante-tones. Then they can sound a bit like the MM's. I plau everything in my coverband with this combo.
As an alternative for the bridge you could consider the Abraxas (voiced between the Mule and the Crawler). I would not pick a Mule. That one can a be a tad bright in strats.
Single coils: if you want that early sixties woody strattone, I would pick MM's if you're guitar has NOT a natural bright tone. If so, I would pick the Pat Pend '63's.
