Really need help deciding on pickups!?...help please
« on: March 04, 2006, 11:37:28 PM »
hi, ive got a Maverick f3 guitar which is a H/S/H guitar with an alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and floyd rose trem. Its got a mississippi queen in the neck. This runs through a Vox AC30 for cleans and a Marshal DSL50.

From the bridge humbucker im looking for something capable of loads of gain, crunch and sustain with quite a modern tone, but nothing too heavy if you get me... with a range from early Rammstein sounds, to crunch (like the intro riff to newborn or the chorus of hysteria by Muse), to even some Led Zep stuff!

The single coil...a crisp and clear modern sounding tone that would suit slow, clean arpegios with reverb...(think Unintended by Muse...nothing too bright tho!

any help would realy be apreciated... :P
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I can't help regarding h/b pups but I am sure the cavalry will arrive shortly to pitch in with suggestions.. I am an Apache s/c enthusiast though.

I've heard good things about Maverick, do the knobs take a long time to get used to?

I've played my friend's F1 a few times, and its a really comfortable guitar. Good neck on it too. the knobs are a bit weird at first, but they are actually quite easy to use. Didnt like the position of the pickup selector- kept changing whilst strumming...

I love Mavericks although I found the neck to be a bit wide for me, its still an awesome guitar. I'm gonna hazard a guess and recommend Nailbombs, they seem really versatile.

WOW, great looking guitar!

There are a few possibilites for that guitar. For the sounds you're describing, I'm thinking you would probably want something like a Crawler/Mother's Milk Combination. Other options would be a VHII/Irish Tour, or Black Dog/Irish Tour.

For more of a 'metal' sound, I would use a Trilogy in the Single coil slot, and combine that with a Cold Sweat or Miracle Man.

The Nailbomb is considered a very versatile pup, but I've not heard one in an alder body, so I can't comment on that one.

I want a maverick so much at the moment. Maybe two, an X1 and one of the hardtail species models. There's a stockist somewhere in cambridge and the plan was to play some last time I was down there. I just forgot where the shop was...

Anyway, pickups. Going on what I know the crawler's probably your best bet for the bridge, or possibly the nailbomb if you need slightly heavier tones. I'm no expert on single coils, but it sounds like a mothers milk would be good.

Modern but not too heavy yet has got to be capable of Rammstein........Mavericks are great guitars and not dissimilar ot Ibanez in response so a Nailbomb would work a treat although I'd describe it as more old school so I'd have to say VHII........it does have a vintage vibe but it's still warm AND has great bite too so makes it very versatile. The Rammstein tone is quite toppy and definately modern and I think the VHII will handle this.
The alternative is to go for a Miracle Man............although powerful, it can sound very modern with it's tight/fast bass response and it's fantastic for Rammstein type material........they also sound great in Maverick/Ibanez style axes.
For the middle coil it'd have to be Irish Tour............vintage hot, great cleans but not thin or brittle.

Maverick's are really great guitars. I recently fitted a pair of Warpigs to a customers F3 and it just sounds massive. But i would probably say Nailbomb for the kind of tone you are after.
