Pickup arrangements
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:52:25 AM »
Hey guys
I have 2 guitars wit HH configuration, 5 way super switch- aftermath and PG Blues  set. I have been playing around the wiring, but would like to get your opinion on that :

What would be your 3 best pickup arrangements for 1. Jazz and 2. Metal?

- Bridge parallel
- Bridge series
- Bridge  single coil
- bridge/Neck single coils tap
- Bridge/neck series
- Bridge/neck parallel
- Neck single coil
- Neck parallel
- Neck Series

Thanks for your input

That question belongs in the Guitar tech section.

With a five way super switch you can almost get any combination of coils you like. The two set choices would be bridge series (i.e. local series, the default setting for metal) and neck series (probably the default setting for jazz). Those are my two favorites and I probably spend 80% - 90% there.

I also like the inside coils of both humbuckers in parallel (kind of a strat tone) and the outside coils in parallel (kind of a tele tone) - both sounds are available on the PRS 5-way rotary, too.  They could be of use for clean passages in a metal context or for fusion jazz. Which one I prefer depends on the guitar - try both and decide.

Both humbuckers (local series wiring) in parallel can also be a nice sound - sometimes however not really distinct from the neck series. I would not put the (locally series wired) humbuckers in series as that tone tends to get muddy quickly. I also never could get anything out of the out-of-phase combinations.

Cheers Stephan
