changing speakers in my orange cab
« on: May 30, 2013, 05:02:27 AM »
I'm thinking of changing the stock celestion V30 which sounds o.k but I prefer the greenback type,

so I'm wondering if it's worth paying silly prices for the heritage range? has anyone had experiences with them and are they really better than cheaper ones?

here are my choices starting with the most expensive first...

Celestion Heritage Series G12H(55)
Celestion G12MH Anniversary
and the Celestion G12M Greenback 'standard' cheaper one....

I'm using a 30 watt Vox VR30 into the Orange PPC112.

Advice on this would be appreciated,

regards,

Ben.

The G12H is not a G12M Greenback, it's a G12H  ;)  More bass and treble than a G12M and a bit harder sounding.  They come in G12H Anniversary, Heritage 55hz and Heritage 75Hz versions.

G12Ms are the classic Greenbacks, and they come in regular and Heritage versions.

If you're after a decent G12M, I found the cheaper Chinese ones to be pretty good.  If you're a gigging player, I'd go for the cheaper ones.  If you only play at home and want that extra few % of goodness, and are happy to pay for it, then the Heritage versions are a little smoother and 'classier' sounding.

cool, it sounds like the heritage is the way to go...I've also had a listen to them all on the celestion website and I keep going back to the Heritage G12M 55Hz greenback with more bass, it just has an amazing midrange that all the others don't have; it's a shame I always pick such expensive stuff lol at least I'll be able to nail that page/hendrix tone now.

I do more recording than playing live, but I'd be happy to take it to a gig.

I think you mean Heritage G12 "H" 55Hz, not M.  You're getting your Greenbacks mixed up  ;)

I like them a lot, I have one in my main 2x12.  I've actually just ordered a G12H 75Hz to see what the difference between them is for myself.  £138 for Heritage G12Hs delivered from Lean Business at the moment, which isn't too bad a deal.

checkout Tayden speakers, handmade in the UK the way Celestions used to be.

I particularly like their Retro 50.

supposedly the 'heritage' range are also hand made in the UK, so it's an exact re-creation of the originals according to the celestion website... are Tayden any cheaper? I'll have to check them out as well

Anyway thanks for the lean business plug, that's a very good price, I've seen them on ebay

Cheaper direct from them rather than via eBay  ;)

Taydens are worth a look if you know what you want, but resale will be pants if you need to sell them later.

I dunno about the heritage greenback, but i thought the heritage g12h30 was a lot nicer than the anniversary- however, admittedly (a) the heritages i have are the 55Hz ones (b) I only play at home (as dave says, whether you'd hear it gigging, or even if you could, would be wiling to bring them to a gig is another thing  ) and (c) from what i hear the anniversary takes a fair bit of breaking in and mine probably aren't properly broken-in yet.

I also thought the tayden great brit sounded pretty close (not identical, but pretty close, the same type of vibe) to the heritage g12h30, allowing for the fact the tayden is 75Hz.

I didn't think the high brit was as close to a greenback, though. However, it's the higher wattage version, the true brit might be closer.

EDIT: I prefer the standard greenback to the standard g12h30, fwiw. Whether i just prefer the tone of the greenback, I dunno (I might prefer the heritage greenback to the heritage g12h30 if i got to try them head to head, too).

Oh and also how close any of those are to original vintage examples, I have no idea, I haven't tried any vintage pre-rola celestions. I'm just going by what my ear tells me sounds better. At pretty low home volumes.

just to clarify, the aim of this post wasn't to confuse you even more than you are already, honest

If you're at all interested in a trade, I have a 2x12 with G12H30s and have been meaning to try out V30s for ages. Or indeed if you want to sell your V30s after changing speakers then let me know :)

I got the G12H (the 55Hz) version for an absolute bargain, PM me about the price and I can sell you the V30 spare I have, not planning on using it again so it's yours

I replaced a pair of late 70's 55hz g12m's with weber made scumback g12h clones
I think I prefer the regular g12m's I had (not sure if chinese) over both
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

yeah it's awesome, it's definitely the sound I have been looking for, there is much more warmth and a more vintage tone than the V30...much smoother as well like you said and a nice darkness and thickness like nothing else I've used.

Yep they have something else going on, the 55Hz G12Hs.

I'm personally loving the switch to the 75Hz versions for my rig and playing style, a bit more tightness in the bass and more upper-mid cut.
